2007-10-19Use helpers to obtain task pid in printks (arch code)Alexey Dobriyan
One of the easiest things to isolate is the pid printed in kernel log. There was a patch, that made this for arch-independent code, this one makes so for arch/xxx files. It took some time to cross-compile it, but hopefully these are all the printks in arch code. 2007-10-17x86: replace NT_PRXFPREG with ELF_CORE_XFPREG_TYPE #defineMark Nelson
Replace NT_PRXFPREG with ELF_CORE_XFPREG_TYPE in the coredump code which allows for more flexibility in the note type for the state of 'extended floating point' implementations in coredumps. New note types can now be added with an appropriate #define. This does #define ELF_CORE_XFPREG_TYPE to be NT_PRXFPREG in all current users so there's are no change in behaviour. This will let us use different note types on powerpc for the Altivec/VMX state that some PowerPC cpus have (G4, PPC970, POWER6) and for the SPE (signal processing extension) state that some embedded PowerPC cpus from Freescale have. 2007-07-20mm: Remove slab destructors from kmem_cache_create().Paul Mundt
Slab destructors were no longer supported after Christoph's c59def9f222d44bb7e2f0a559f2906191a0862d7 change. They've been BUGs for both slab and slub, and slob never supported them either. This rips out support for the dtor pointer from kmem_cache_create() completely and fixes up every single callsite in the kernel (there were about 224, not including the slab allocator definitions themselves, or the documentation references). 2007-07-19mm: variable length argument supportOllie Wild
Remove the arg+env limit of MAX_ARG_PAGES by copying the strings directly from the old mm into the new mm. We create the new mm before the binfmt code runs, and place the new stack at the very top of the address space. Once the binfmt code runs and figures out where the stack should be, we move it downwards. It is a bit peculiar in that we have one task with two mm's, one of which is inactive. 2007-07-16diskquota: 32bit quota tools on 64bit architecturesVasily Tarasov
OpenVZ Linux kernel team has discovered the problem with 32bit quota tools working on 64bit architectures. In 2.6.10 kernel sys32_quotactl() function was replaced by sys_quotactl() with the comment "sys_quotactl seems to be 32/64bit clean, enable it for 32bit" However this isn't right. Look at if_dqblk structure: struct if_dqblk { __u64 dqb_bhardlimit; __u64 dqb_bsoftlimit; __u64 dqb_curspace; __u64 dqb_ihardlimit; __u64 dqb_isoftlimit; __u64 dqb_curinodes; __u64 dqb_btime; __u64 dqb_itime; __u32 dqb_valid; }; For 32 bit quota tools sizeof(if_dqblk) == 0x44. But for 64 bit kernel its size is 0x48, 'cause of alignment! Thus we got a problem. Attached patch reintroduce sys32_quotactl() function, that handles this and related situations. 2007-05-08[IA64] fix stack alignment for ia32 signal handlersMarkus F.X.J. Oberhumer
This fixes the setup of the alignment of the signal frame, so that all signal handlers are run with a properly aligned stack frame. The current code "over-aligns" the stack pointer so that the stack frame is effectively always mis-aligned by 4 bytes. But what we really want is that on function entry ((sp + 4) & 15) == 0, which matches what would happen if the stack were aligned before a "call" instruction. i386 and x86_64 are already fixed by d347f372273c2b3d86a66e2e1c94c790c208e166 Signed-off-by: Markus F.X.J. 2007-02-11[PATCH] Common compat_sys_sysinfoKyle McMartin
I noticed that almost all architectures implemented exactly the same sys32_sysinfo... except parisc, where a bug was to be found in handling of the uptime. So let's remove a whole whack of code for fun and profit. Cribbed compat_sys_sysinfo from x86_64's implementation, since I figured it would be the best tested. This patch incorporates Arnd's suggestion of not using set_fs/get_fs, but instead extracting out the common code from sys_sysinfo. 2006-10-03[PATCH] VFS: Make filldir_t and struct kstat deal in 64-bit inode numbersDavid Howells
These patches make the kernel pass 64-bit inode numbers internally when communicating to userspace, even on a 32-bit system. They are required because some filesystems have intrinsic 64-bit inode numbers: NFS3+ and XFS for example. The 64-bit inode numbers are then propagated to userspace automatically where the arch supports it. Problems have been seen with userspace (eg: ld.so) using the 64-bit inode number returned by stat64() or getdents64() to differentiate files, and failing because the 64-bit inode number space was compressed to 32-bits, and so overlaps occur. This patch: Make filldir_t take a 64-bit inode number and struct kstat carry a 64-bit inode number so that 64-bit inode numbers can be passed back to userspace. The stat functions then returns the full 64-bit inode number where available and where possible. If it is not possible to represent the inode number supplied by the filesystem in the field provided by userspace, then error EOVERFLOW will be issued. Similarly, the getdents/readdir functions now pass the full 64-bit inode number to userspace where possible, returning EOVERFLOW instead when a directory entry is encountered that can't be properly represented. Note that this means that some inodes will not be stat'able on a 32-bit system with old libraries where they were before - but it does mean that there will be no ambiguity over what a 32-bit inode number refers to. Note similarly that directory scans may be cut short with an error on a 32-bit system with old libraries where the scan would work before for the same reasons. It is judged unlikely that this situation will occur because modern glibc uses 64-bit capable versions of stat and getdents class functions exclusively, and that older systems are unlikely to encounter unrepresentable inode numbers anyway. 2006-03-25[PATCH] sys_alarm() unsigned signed conversion fixupThomas Gleixner
alarm() calls the kernel with an unsigend int timeout in seconds. The value is stored in the tv_sec field of a struct timeval to setup the itimer. The tv_sec field of struct timeval is of type long, which causes the tv_sec value to be negative on 32 bit machines if seconds > INT_MAX. Before the hrtimer merge (pre 2.6.16) such a negative value was converted to the maximum jiffies timeout by the timeval_to_jiffies conversion. It's not clear whether this was intended or just happened to be done by the timeval_to_jiffies code. hrtimers expect a timeval in canonical form and treat a negative timeout as already expired. This breaks the legitimate usage of alarm() with a timeout value > INT_MAX seconds. For 32 bit machines it is therefor necessary to limit the internal seconds value to avoid API breakage. Instead of doing this in all implementations of sys_alarm the duplicated sys_alarm code is moved into a common function in itimer.c Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

2006-01-10[PATCH] sanitize building of fs/compat_ioctl.cChristoph Hellwig
Now that all these entries in the arch ioctl32.c files are gone [1], we can build fs/compat_ioctl.c as a normal object and kill tons of cruft. We need a special do_ioctl32_pointer handler for s390 so the compat_ptr call is done. This is not needed but harmless on all other architectures. Also remove some superflous includes in fs/compat_ioctl.c Tested on ppc64. [1] parisc still had it's PPP handler left, which is not fully correct for ppp and besides that ppp uses the generic SIOCPRIV ioctl so it'd kick in for all netdevice users. We can introduce a proper handler in one of the next patch series by adding a compat_ioctl method to struct net_device but for now let's just kill it - parisc doesn't compile in mainline anyway and I don't want this to block this patchset. 2006-01-08[PATCH] use ptrace_get_task_struct in various placesChristoph Hellwig
The ptrace_get_task_struct() helper that I added as part of the ptrace consolidation is useful in variety of places that currently opencode it. Switch them to the common helpers. Add a ptrace_traceme() helper that needs to be explicitly called, and simplify the ptrace_get_task_struct() interface. We don't need the request argument now, and we return the task_struct directly, using ERR_PTR() for error returns. 2005-12-06[IA64] Change SET_PERSONALITY to comply with comment in binfmt_elf.c.Robin Holt
We have a customer application which trips a bug. The comment in fs/binfmt_elf.c in load_elf_library() before the call to SET_PERSONALITY() indicates that task_size must not be changed for the running application until flush_thread, but is for ia64 executing ia32 binaries. This patch moves the setting of task_size from SET_PERSONALITY() to flush_thread() as indicated. The customer application no longer is able to trip the bug. 2005-11-09[PATCH] remove ioctl32_handler_tChristoph Hellwig
Some architectures define and use this type in their compat_ioctl code, but all of them can easily use the identical ioctl_trans_handler_t type that is defined in common code. 2005-10-30[PATCH] unify sys_ptrace prototypeChristoph Hellwig
Make sure we always return, as all syscalls should. Also move the common prototype to <linux/syscalls.h> Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Miklos Szeredi <miklos@szeredi.hu> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-09-14[PATCH] error path in setup_arg_pages() misses vm_unacct_memory()Hugh Dickins
Pavel Emelianov and Kirill Korotaev observe that fs and arch users of security_vm_enough_memory tend to forget to vm_unacct_memory when a failure occurs further down (typically in setup_arg_pages variants). These are all users of insert_vm_struct, and that reservation will only be unaccounted on exit if the vma is marked VM_ACCOUNT: which in some cases it is (hidden inside VM_STACK_FLAGS) and in some cases it isn't. So x86_64 32-bit and ppc64 vDSO ELFs have been leaking memory into Committed_AS each time they're run. But don't add VM_ACCOUNT to them, it's inappropriate to reserve against the very unlikely case that gdb be used to COW a vDSO page - we ought to do something about that in do_wp_page, but there are yet other inconsistencies to be resolved. The safe and economical way to fix this is to let insert_vm_struct do the security_vm_enough_memory check when it finds VM_ACCOUNT is set. And the MIPS irix_brk has been calling security_vm_enough_memory before calling do_brk which repeats it, doubly accounting and so also leaking. Remove that, and all the fs and arch calls to security_vm_enough_memory: give it a less misleading name later on. 2005-09-12[PATCH] x86-64: Fix 32bit sendfileTsuneo.Yoshioka@f-secure.com
If we use 64bit kernel on ia64/x86_64/s390 architecture, and we run 32bit binary on 32bit compatibility mode, sendfile system call seems be not set offset argument. This is because sendfile's return value is not zero but the code regards the result by return value is zero or not. This problem will be affect to ia64/x86_64/s390 and not affect to other architecture does not affect other architecture (mips/parisc/ppc64/sparc64).
