2010-10-28parisc: fix compile failure with kmap_atomic changesJames Bottomley
Commit 3e4d3af501cc ("mm: stack based kmap_atomic()") overlooked the fact that parisc uses kmap as a coherence mechanism, so even though we have no highmem, we do need to supply our own versions of kmap (and atomic). This patch converts the parisc kmap to the form which is needed to keep it compiling (it's a simple prototype and name change). 2010-10-18irq_work: Add generic hardirq context callbacksPeter Zijlstra
Provide a mechanism that allows running code in IRQ context. It is most useful for NMI code that needs to interact with the rest of the system -- like wakeup a task to drain buffers. Perf currently has such a mechanism, so extract that and provide it as a generic feature, independent of perf so that others may also benefit. The IRQ context callback is generated through self-IPIs where possible, or on architectures like powerpc the decrementer (the built-in timer facility) is set to generate an interrupt immediately. Architectures that don't have anything like this get to do with a callback from the timer tick. These architectures can call irq_work_run() at the tail of any IRQ handlers that might enqueue such work (like the perf IRQ handler) to avoid undue latencies in processing the work. 2010-10-07Fix IRQ flag handling namingDavid Howells
Fix the IRQ flag handling naming. In linux/irqflags.h under one configuration, it maps: local_irq_enable() -> raw_local_irq_enable() local_irq_disable() -> raw_local_irq_disable() local_irq_save() -> raw_local_irq_save() ... and under the other configuration, it maps: raw_local_irq_enable() -> local_irq_enable() raw_local_irq_disable() -> local_irq_disable() raw_local_irq_save() -> local_irq_save() ... This is quite confusing. There should be one set of names expected of the arch, and this should be wrapped to give another set of names that are expected by users of this facility. Change this to have the arch provide: flags = arch_local_save_flags() flags = arch_local_irq_save() arch_local_irq_restore(flags) arch_local_irq_disable() arch_local_irq_enable() arch_irqs_disabled_flags(flags) arch_irqs_disabled() arch_safe_halt() Then linux/irqflags.h wraps these to provide: raw_local_save_flags(flags) raw_local_irq_save(flags) raw_local_irq_restore(flags) raw_local_irq_disable() raw_local_irq_enable() raw_irqs_disabled_flags(flags) raw_irqs_disabled() raw_safe_halt() with type checking on the flags 'arguments', and then wraps those to provide: local_save_flags(flags) local_irq_save(flags) local_irq_restore(flags) local_irq_disable() local_irq_enable() irqs_disabled_flags(flags) irqs_disabled() safe_halt() with tracing included if enabled. The arch functions can now all be inline functions rather than some of them having to be macros. 2010-09-14compat: Make compat_alloc_user_space() incorporate the access_ok()H. Peter Anvin
compat_alloc_user_space() expects the caller to independently call access_ok() to verify the returned area. A missing call could introduce problems on some architectures. This patch incorporates the access_ok() check into compat_alloc_user_space() and also adds a sanity check on the length. The existing compat_alloc_user_space() implementations are renamed arch_compat_alloc_user_space() and are used as part of the implementation of the new global function. This patch assumes NULL will cause __get_user()/__put_user() to either fail or access userspace on all architectures. This should be followed by checking the return value of compat_access_user_space() for NULL in the callers, at which time the access_ok() in the callers can also be removed. 2010-08-11dma-mapping: remove dma_is_consistent APIFUJITA Tomonori
Architectures implement dma_is_consistent() in different ways (some misinterpret the definition of API in DMA-API.txt). So it hasn't been so useful for drivers. We have only one user of the API in tree. Unlikely out-of-tree drivers use the API. Even if we fix dma_is_consistent() in some architectures, it doesn't look useful at all. It was invented long ago for some old systems that can't allocate coherent memory at all. It's better to export only APIs that are definitely necessary for drivers. Let's remove this API. 2010-08-11dma-mapping: unify dma_get_cache_alignment implementationsFUJITA Tomonori
dma_get_cache_alignment returns the minimum DMA alignment. Architectures defines it as ARCH_DMA_MINALIGN (formally ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN). So we can unify dma_get_cache_alignment implementations. Note that some architectures implement dma_get_cache_alignment wrongly. dma_get_cache_alignment() should return the minimum DMA alignment. So fully-coherent architectures should return 1. 2010-08-10tty: Add EXTPROC support for LINEMODEhyc@symas.com
This patch is against the 2.6.34 source. Paraphrased from the 1989 BSD patch by David Borman @ cray.com: These are the changes needed for the kernel to support LINEMODE in the server. There is a new bit in the termios local flag word, EXTPROC. When this bit is set, several aspects of the terminal driver are disabled. Input line editing, character echo, and mapping of signals are all disabled. This allows the telnetd to turn off these functions when in linemode, but still keep track of what state the user wants the terminal to be in. New ioctl: TIOCSIG Generate a signal to processes in the current process group of the pty. There is a new mode for packet driver, the TIOCPKT_IOCTL bit. When packet mode is turned on in the pty, and the EXTPROC bit is set, then whenever the state of the pty is changed, the next read on the master side of the pty will have the TIOCPKT_IOCTL bit set. This allows the process on the server side of the pty to know when the state of the terminal has changed; it can then issue the appropriate ioctl to retrieve the new state. Since the original BSD patches accompanied the source code for telnet I've left that reference here, but obviously the feature is useful for any remote terminal protocol, including ssh. The corresponding feature has existed in the BSD tty driver since 1989. For historical reference, a good copy of the relevant files can be found here: http://anonsvn.mit.edu/viewvc/krb5/trunk/src/appl/telnet/?pathrev=17741 Signed-off-by: Howard Chu <hyc@symas.com> Cc: Alan Cox <alan@lxorguk.ukuu.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>

2010-08-09kmap_atomic: make kunmap_atomic() harder to misuseCesar Eduardo Barros
kunmap_atomic() is currently at level -4 on Rusty's "Hard To Misuse" list[1] ("Follow common convention and you'll get it wrong"), except in some architectures when CONFIG_DEBUG_HIGHMEM is set[2][3]. kunmap() takes a pointer to a struct page; kunmap_atomic(), however, takes takes a pointer to within the page itself. This seems to once in a while trip people up (the convention they are following is the one from kunmap()). Make it much harder to misuse, by moving it to level 9 on Rusty's list[4] ("The compiler/linker won't let you get it wrong"). This is done by refusing to build if the type of its first argument is a pointer to a struct page. The real kunmap_atomic() is renamed to kunmap_atomic_notypecheck() (which is what you would call in case for some strange reason calling it with a pointer to a struct page is not incorrect in your code). The previous version of this patch was compile tested on x86-64. [1] http://ozlabs.org/~rusty/index.cgi/tech/2008-04-01.html [2] In these cases, it is at level 5, "Do it right or it will always break at runtime." [3] At least mips and powerpc look very similar, and sparc also seems to share a common ancestor with both; there seems to be quite some degree of copy-and-paste coding here. The include/asm/highmem.h file for these three archs mention x86 CPUs at its top. [4] http://ozlabs.org/~rusty/index.cgi/tech/2008-03-30.html [5] As an aside, could someone tell me why mn10300 uses unsigned long as the first parameter of kunmap_atomic() instead of void *? 2010-03-12ptrace: move user_enable_single_step & co prototypes to linux/ptrace.hChristoph Hellwig
While in theory user_enable_single_step/user_disable_single_step/ user_enable_blockstep could also be provided as an inline or macro there's no good reason to do so, and having the prototype in one places keeps code size and confusion down. Roland said: The original thought there was that user_enable_single_step() et al might well be only an instruction or three on a sane machine (as if we have any of those!), and since there is only one call site inlining would be beneficial. But I agree that there is no strong reason to care about inlining it. As to the arch changes, there is only one thought I'd add to the record. It was always my thinking that for an arch where PTRACE_SINGLESTEP does text-modifying breakpoint insertion, user_enable_single_step() should not be provided. That is, arch_has_single_step()=>true means that there is an arch facility with "pure" semantics that does not have any unexpected side effects. Inserting a breakpoint might do very unexpected strange things in multi-threaded situations. Aside from that, it is a peculiar side effect that user_{enable,disable}_single_step() should cause COW de-sharing of text pages and so forth. For PTRACE_SINGLESTEP, all these peculiarities are the status quo ante for that arch, so having arch_ptrace() itself do those is one thing. But for building other things in the future, it is nicer to have a uniform "pure" semantics that arch-independent code can expect. OTOH, all such arch issues are really up to the arch maintainer. As of today, there is nothing but ptrace using user_enable_single_step() et al so it's a distinction without a practical difference. If/when there are other facilities that use user_enable_single_step() and might care, the affected arch's can revisit the question when someone cares about the quality of the arch support for said new facility. 2010-03-12improve sys_newuname() for compat architecturesChristoph Hellwig
On an architecture that supports 32-bit compat we need to override the reported machine in uname with the 32-bit value. Instead of doing this separately in every architecture introduce a COMPAT_UTS_MACHINE define in <asm/compat.h> and apply it directly in sys_newuname(). 2010-02-20MM: Pass a PTE pointer to update_mmu_cache() rather than the PTE itselfRussell King
On VIVT ARM, when we have multiple shared mappings of the same file in the same MM, we need to ensure that we have coherency across all copies. We do this via make_coherent() by making the pages uncacheable. This used to work fine, until we allowed highmem with highpte - we now have a page table which is mapped as required, and is not available for modification via update_mmu_cache(). Ralf Beache suggested getting rid of the PTE value passed to update_mmu_cache(): On MIPS update_mmu_cache() calls __update_tlb() which walks pagetables to construct a pointer to the pte again. Passing a pte_t * is much more elegant. Maybe we might even replace the pte argument with the pte_t? Ben Herrenschmidt would also like the pte pointer for PowerPC: Passing the ptep in there is exactly what I want. I want that -instead- of the PTE value, because I have issue on some ppc cases, for I$/D$ coherency, where set_pte_at() may decide to mask out the _PAGE_EXEC. So, pass in the mapped page table pointer into update_mmu_cache(), and remove the PTE value, updating all implementations and call sites to suit.
