2006-06-22[PATCH] zlib_inflate: Upgrade library code to a recent versionRichard Purdie
Upgrade the zlib_inflate implementation in the kernel from a patched version 1.1.3/4 to a patched 1.2.3. The code in the kernel is about seven years old and I noticed that the external zlib library's inflate performance was significantly faster (~50%) than the code in the kernel on ARM (and faster again on x86_32). For comparison the newer deflate code is 20% slower on ARM and 50% slower on x86_32 but gives an approx 1% compression ratio improvement. I don't consider this to be an improvement for kernel use so have no plans to change the zlib_deflate code. Various changes have been made to the zlib code in the kernel, the most significant being the extra functions/flush option used by ppp_deflate. This update reimplements the features PPP needs to ensure it continues to work. This code has been tested on ARM under both JFFS2 (with zlib compression enabled) and ppp_deflate and on x86_32. JFFS2 sees an approx. 10% real world file read speed improvement. This patch also removes ZLIB_VERSION as it no longer has a correct value. We don't need version checks anyway as the kernel's module handling will take care of that for us. This removal is also more in keeping with the zlib author's wishes (http://www.zlib.net/zlib_faq.html#faq24) and I've added something to the zlib.h header to note its a modified version. 2006-04-04kbuild: use relative path to -ISam Ravnborg
Using a relative path has the advantage that when the kernel source tree is moved the relevant .o files will not be rebuild just because the path to the kernel src has changed. This also got rid of a user of TOPDIR - which has been deprecated for a long time now. Signed-off-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org>
2006-03-28ppc: Remove CHRP, POWER3 and POWER4 support from arch/ppcPaul Mackerras
32-bit CHRP machines are now supported only in arch/powerpc, as are all 64-bit PowerPC processors. This means that we don't use Open Firmware on any platform in arch/ppc any more. This makes PReP support a single-platform option like every other platform support option in arch/ppc now, thus CONFIG_PPC_MULTIPLATFORM is gone from arch/ppc. CONFIG_PPC_PREP is the option that selects PReP support and is generally what has replaced CONFIG_PPC_MULTIPLATFORM within arch/ppc. _machine is all but dead now, being #defined to 0. Updated Makefiles, comments and Kconfig options generally to reflect these changes. Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>

2006-03-06kbuild: change kbuild to not rely on incorrect GNU make behaviorPaul Smith
The kbuild system takes advantage of an incorrect behavior in GNU make. Once this behavior is fixed, all files in the kernel rebuild every time, even if nothing has changed. This patch ensures kbuild works with both the incorrect and correct behaviors of GNU make. For more details on the incorrect behavior, see: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-make/2006-03/msg00003.html Changes in this patch: - Keep all targets that are to be marked .PHONY in a variable, PHONY. - Add .PHONY: $(PHONY) to mark them properly. - Remove any $(PHONY) files from the $? list when determining whether targets are up-to-date or not. 2006-02-07[PATCH] powerpc: Migrate Xilinx Vertex support from the OCP bus to the ↵Grant C. Likely
platfom bus. This patch only deals with the serial port definitions as there is no support for any other xilinx IP cores in the kernel tree at the moment. Board specific configuration moved out of virtex.[ch] and into the xparameters.h wrapper. This also prepares for the transition to the flattened device tree model. When the bootloader provides a device tree generated from an xparameters.h files, the kernel will no longer need xparameters/*. The platform bus will get populated with data from the device tree, and the device drivers will be automatically connected to the devices. Only the bootloader (or ppcboot) will need xparameters directly. Signed-off-by: Grant C. Likely <grant.likely@secretlab.ca> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
2006-01-15[PATCH] ppc: Remove powermac support from ARCH=ppcPaul Mackerras
This makes it possible to build kernels for PReP and/or CHRP with ARCH=ppc by removing the (non-building) powermac support. It's now also possible to select PReP and CHRP independently. Powermac users should now build with ARCH=powerpc instead of ARCH=ppc. (This does mean that it is no longer possible to build a 32-bit kernel for a G5.) Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
2006-01-09[PATCH] ppc32: Put cache flush routines back into .relocate_code sectionPaul Janzen
In 2.6.14, we had the following definition of _GLOBAL() in include/asm-ppc/processor.h: #define _GLOBAL(n)\ .stabs __stringify(n:F-1),N_FUN,0,0,n;\ .globl n;\ n: In 2.6.15, as part of the great powerpc merge, we moved this definition to include/asm-powerpc/ppc_asm.h, where it appears (to 32-bit code) as: #define _GLOBAL(n) \ .text; \ .stabs __stringify(n:F-1),N_FUN,0,0,n;\ .globl n; \ n: Mostly, this is fine. However, we also have the following, in arch/ppc/boot/common/util.S: .section ".relocate_code","xa" [...] _GLOBAL(flush_instruction_cache) [...] _GLOBAL(flush_data_cache) [...] The addition of the .text section definition in the definition of _GLOBAL overrides the .relocate_code section definition. As a result, these two functions don't end up in .relocate_code, so they don't get relocated correctly, and the boot fails. There's another suspicious-looking usage at kernel/swsusp.S:37 that someone should look into. I did not exhaustively search the source tree, though. The following is the minimal patch that fixes the immediate problem. I could easily be convinced that the _GLOBAL definition should be modified to remove the ".text;" line either instead of, or in addition to, this fix. 2006-01-06[PATCH] ppc32: Re-add embed_config.c to ml300/ep405Peter Korsgaard
Commit 3e9e7c1d0b7a36fb8affb973a054c5098e27baa8 (ppc32: cleanup AMCC PPC40x eval boards to support U-Boot) broke the kernel for ML300 / EP405. It still compiles as there's a weak definition of the function in misc-embedded.c, but the kernel crashes as the bd_t fixup isn't performed. 2005-12-01[PATCH] ppc32: fix treeboot image entrypointEugene Surovegin
Correctly specify treeboot based image entrypoint. Currently makefile uses $(ENTRYPOINT) which isn't defined anywhere. Each board port sets entrypoint-$(CONFIG_BOARD_NAME) instead. Without this patch I cannot boot Ocotea (PPC440GX eval board) anymore. I was getting random "OS panic" errors from OpenBIOS for a while, but with current kernel I get them all the time (probably because image became bigger). 2005-11-10[PATCH] powerpc: Consolidate asm compatibility macrosDavid Gibson
This patch consolidates macros used to generate assembly for compatibility across different CPUs or configs. A new header, asm-powerpc/asm-compat.h contains the main compatibility macros. It uses some preprocessor magic to make the macros suitable both for use in .S files, and in inline asm in .c files. Headers (bitops.h, uaccess.h, atomic.h, bug.h) which had their own such compatibility macros are changed to use asm-compat.h. ppc_asm.h is now for use in .S files *only*, and a #error enforces that. As such, we're a lot more careless about namespace pollution here than in asm-compat.h. While we're at it, this patch adds a call to the PPC405_ERR77 macro in futex.h which should have had it already, but didn't. Built and booted on pSeries, Maple and iSeries (ARCH=powerpc). Built for 32-bit powermac (ARCH=powerpc) and Walnut (ARCH=ppc). Signed-off-by: David Gibson <dwg@au1.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
2005-11-10ppc/powerpc: workarounds for old Open Firmware versionsPaul Mackerras
This adds code to work around some problems with old versions of Open Firmware, such as on the early powermacs (7500 etc.) and the "Longtrail" CHRP machine. On these machines we have to claim the physical and virtual address ranges explicitly when claiming memory and then set up a V->P mapping. The Longtrail has more problems: setprop doesn't work, and we have to set an "allow-reclaim" variable to 0 in order to get claim on physical memory ranges to fail if the memory is already claimed. 2005-10-26powerpc: Fixes to get the Longtrail CHRP a bit furtherPaul Mackerras
Talk about buggy firmware... the OF on the Longtrail returns 0 from the claim client service rather than -1 when the claim fails. It also has no device_type on the /memory node and blows up if the output buffer for package-to-path is too big. This also fixes a bug with calling alloc_up with align == 0, where we did _ALIGN_UP(alloc_bottom, 0) which will end up as 0. Lastly, we now check the return value (in r3) from calling the prom, and return -1 from call_prom if we get a negative value back. That is supposed to indicate that the requested client service doesn't exist. Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
2005-10-23powerpc: Make coff boot wrapper load the kernel at 8MPaul Mackerras
Previously it claimed 7MB starting at the 9M point and loaded the kernel there. That meant that prom_init put the flattened device tree above 16M. On the 601 that caused the early device tree scan to fail, since only 16MB are mapped with BATs on the 601. Moving this down to 8MB allows prom_init to put the flattened device tree between 15M and 16M, so it works on the 601. Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
2005-09-29[PATCH] ppc32 ld.script fix for building on ppc64Al Viro
In arch/ppc/boot/ld.script we need OUTPUT_ARCH(powerpc:common) for the same reasons why we need it in vmlinux.lds.S; when we build on ppc64 box, we need to be explicit about the target. 2005-09-09[PATCH] ppc32: In the boot code, don't rely on BASE_BAUD directlyTom Rini
Modifies serial_init to get base baud rate from the rs_table entry instead of BAUD_BASE. This patch eliminates duplication between the SERIAL_PORT_DFNS macro and BAUD_BASE. Without the patch, if a port set the baud rate in SERIAL_PORT_DFNS, but did not update BASE_BAUD, the BASE_BAUD value would still be used. 2005-08-29[PATCH] Remove NACA fixed address constraintDavid Gibson
Comments in head.S suggest that the iSeries naca has a fixed address, because tools expect to find it there. The only tool which appears to access the naca is addRamDisk, but both the in-kernel version and the version used in RHEL and SuSE in fact locate the NACA the same way as the hypervisor does, by following the pointer in the hvReleaseData structure. Since the requirement for a fixed address seems to be obsolete, this patch removes the naca from head.S and replaces it with a normal C initializer. For good measure, it removes an old version of addRamDisk.c which was sitting, unused, in the ppc32 tree. 2005-04-16Linux-2.6.12-rc2v2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
