2007-11-19[POWERPC] 4xx: Use virtual PVR value to init FPU on arch/ppc 440EPJosh Boyer
This fixes arch/ppc 440EP platforms to setup the FPU correctly. A virtual PVR is used, as 440GR platforms share an identical hardware PVR value and do not have an FPU. Signed-off-by: Josh Boyer <jwboyer@linux.vnet.ibm.com>
2007-11-13[POWERPC] Avoid unpaired stwcx. on some processorsBecky Bruce
The context switch code in the kernel issues a dummy stwcx. to clear the reservation, as recommended by the architecture. However, some processors can have issues if this stwcx to address A occurs while the reservation is already held to a different address B. To avoid this problem, the dummy stwcx. needs to be paired with a dummy lwarx to the same address. This adds the dummy lwarx, and creates a cpu feature bit to indicate which cpus are affected. Tested on mpc8641_hpcn_defconfig in arch/powerpc; build tested in arch/ppc. Signed-off-by: Becky Bruce <becky.bruce@freescale.com> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
2007-11-01[POWERPC] 4xx: Deal with 44x virtually tagged icacheBenjamin Herrenschmidt
The 44x family has an interesting "feature" which is a virtually tagged instruction cache (yuck !). So far, we haven't dealt with it properly, which means we've been mostly lucky or people didn't report the problems, unless people have been running custom patches in their distro... This is an attempt at fixing it properly. I chose to do it by setting a global flag whenever we change a PTE that was previously marked executable, and flush the entire instruction cache upon return to user space when that happens. This is a bit heavy handed, but it's hard to do more fine grained flushes as the icbi instruction, on those processor, for some very strange reasons (since the cache is virtually mapped) still requires a valid TLB entry for reading in the target address space, which isn't something I want to deal with. 2007-11-01[POWERPC] 4xx: Fix 4xx flush_tlb_page()Benjamin Herrenschmidt
On 4xx CPUs, the current implementation of flush_tlb_page() uses a low level _tlbie() assembly function that only works for the current PID. Thus, invalidations caused by, for example, a COW fault triggered by get_user_pages() from a different context will not work properly, causing among other things, gdb breakpoints to fail. This patch adds a "pid" argument to _tlbie() on 4xx processors, and uses it to flush entries in the right context. FSL BookE also gets the argument but it seems they don't need it (their tlbivax form ignores the PID when invalidating according to the document I have). 2007-10-19pid namespaces: define is_global_init() and is_container_init()Serge E. Hallyn
is_init() is an ambiguous name for the pid==1 check. Split it into is_global_init() and is_container_init(). A cgroup init has it's tsk->pid == 1. A global init also has it's tsk->pid == 1 and it's active pid namespace is the init_pid_ns. But rather than check the active pid namespace, compare the task structure with 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper', which is initialized during boot to the /sbin/init process and never changes. Changelog: 2.6.22-rc4-mm2-pidns1: - Use 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper' to determine if a given task is the global init (/sbin/init) process. This would improve performance and remove dependence on the task_pid(). 2.6.21-mm2-pidns2: - [Sukadev Bhattiprolu] Changed is_container_init() calls in {powerpc, ppc,avr32}/traps.c for the _exception() call to is_global_init(). This way, we kill only the cgroup if the cgroup's init has a bug rather than force a kernel panic. 2007-10-04[PPC] Use cpu setup routines from cpu_setup_44x.S for ARCH=ppcPaul Mackerras
Commit 8112753bb2c0045398c89d0647792b39805f6d40 made 44x in ARCH=powerpc builds use cpu setup routines in cpu_setup_44x.S, but didn't make a similar change for ARCH=ppc, and consequently the ARCH=ppc builds fail with undefined symbols (since both use the same cputable.c). This fixes it by including cpu_setup_44x.S in the ARCH=ppc builds, and by taking out the now-redundant FPU initialization in arch/ppc/kernel/head_44x.S. 2007-09-22[POWERPC] Fix ppc kernels after build-id additionMeelis Roos
This patch fixes arch/ppc kernels, at least for prep subarch, after build-id addition. Without this, kernels were 3 times the size and bootloader refused to load them. Now they are back to normal again. Tested only with Roland McGrath's "Use LDFLAGS_MODULE only for .ko links" patch applied - boots and works fine. 2007-09-10[PPC] 8xx: Fix r3 trashing due to 8MB TLB page instantiationJochen Friedrich
Instantiation of 8MB pages on the TLB cache for the kernel static mapping trashes r3 register on !CONFIG_8xx_CPU6 configurations. This ensures r3 gets saved and restored. This has been posted to linuxppc-embedded by Marcelo Tosatti <marcelo@kvack.org>, but only an incomplete version of the patch has been applied in c51e078f82096a7d35ac8ec2416272e843a0e1c4. This patch adds the rest of the fix. Signed-off-by: Jochen Friedrich <jochen@scram.de> Signed-off-by: Kumar Gala <galak@kernel.crashing.org>
2007-08-15[POWERPC] Fix small race in 44x tlbie functionDavid Gibson
The 440 family of processors don't have a tlbie instruction. So, we implement TLB invalidates by explicitly searching the TLB with tlbsx., then clobbering the relevant entry, if any. Unfortunately the PID for the search needs to be stored in the MMUCR register, which is also used by the TLB miss handler. Interrupts were enabled in _tlbie(), so an interrupt between loading the MMUCR and the tlbsx could cause incorrect search results, and thus a failure to invalide TLB entries which needed to be invalidated. This fixes the problem in both arch/ppc and arch/powerpc by inhibiting interrupts (even critical and debug interrupts) across the relevant instructions. 2007-07-19define new percpu interface for shared dataFenghua Yu
per cpu data section contains two types of data. One set which is exclusively accessed by the local cpu and the other set which is per cpu, but also shared by remote cpus. In the current kernel, these two sets are not clearely separated out. This can potentially cause the same data cacheline shared between the two sets of data, which will result in unnecessary bouncing of the cacheline between cpus. One way to fix the problem is to cacheline align the remotely accessed per cpu data, both at the beginning and at the end. Because of the padding at both ends, this will likely cause some memory wastage and also the interface to achieve this is not clean. This patch: Moves the remotely accessed per cpu data (which is currently marked as ____cacheline_aligned_in_smp) into a different section, where all the data elements are cacheline aligned. And as such, this differentiates the local only data and remotely accessed data cleanly. 2007-07-16generic bug: use show_regs() instead of dump_stack()Heiko Carstens
The current generic bug implementation has a call to dump_stack() in case a WARN_ON(whatever) gets hit. Since report_bug(), which calls dump_stack(), gets called from an exception handler we can do better: just pass the pt_regs structure to report_bug() and pass it to show_regs() in case of a warning. This will give more debug informations like register contents, etc... In addition this avoids some pointless lines that dump_stack() emits, since it includes a stack backtrace of the exception handler which is of no interest in case of a warning. E.g. on s390 the following lines are currently always present in a stack backtrace if dump_stack() gets called from report_bug(): [<000000000001517a>] show_trace+0x92/0xe8) [<0000000000015270>] show_stack+0xa0/0xd0 [<00000000000152ce>] dump_stack+0x2e/0x3c [<0000000000195450>] report_bug+0x98/0xf8 [<0000000000016cc8>] illegal_op+0x1fc/0x21c [<00000000000227d6>] sysc_return+0x0/0x10 Acked-by: Jeremy Fitzhardinge <jeremy@goop.org> Acked-by: Haavard Skinnemoen <hskinnemoen@atmel.com> Cc: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de> Cc: Kyle McMartin <kyle@parisc-linux.org> Cc: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Cc: Paul Mundt <lethal@linux-sh.org> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Heiko Carstens <heiko.carstens@de.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2007-07-11PCI: Use a weak symbol for the empty version of pcibios_add_platform_entries()Michael Ellerman
I'm not sure if this is going to fly, weak symbols work on the compilers I'm using, but whether they work for all of the affected architectures I can't say. I've cc'ed as many arch maintainers/lists as I could find. But assuming they do, we can use a weak empty definition of pcibios_add_platform_entries() to avoid having an empty definition on every arch. 2007-06-14[POWERPC] Merge CPU features pertaining to icache coherencyDavid Gibson
Currently the powerpc kernel has a 64-bit only feature, COHERENT_ICACHE used for those CPUS which maintain icache/dcache coherency in hardware (POWER5, essentially). It also has a feature, SPLIT_ID_CACHE, which is used on CPUs which have separate i and d-caches, which is to say everything except 601 and Freescale E200. In nearly all the places we check the SPLIT_ID_CACHE, what we actually care about is whether the i and d-caches are coherent (which they will be, trivially, if they're the same cache). This tries to clarify the situation a little. The COHERENT_ICACHE feature becomes availble on 32-bit and is set for all CPUs where i and d-cache are effectively coherent, whether this is due to special logic (POWER5) or because they're unified. We check this, instead of SPLIT_ID_CACHE nearly everywhere. The SPLIT_ID_CACHE feature itself is replaced by a UNIFIED_ID_CACHE feature with reversed sense, set only on 601 and Freescale E200. In the two places (one Freescale BookE specific) where we really care whether it's a unified cache, not whether they're coherent, we check this feature. The CPUs with unified cache are so few, we could consider replacing this feature bit with explicit checks against the PVR. This will make unifying the 32-bit and 64-bit cache flush code a little more straightforward. Signed-off-by: David Gibson <dwg@au1.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>

2007-05-09rename thread_info to stackRoman Zippel
This finally renames the thread_info field in task structure to stack, so that the assumptions about this field are gone and archs have more freedom about placing the thread_info structure. Nonbroken archs which have a proper thread pointer can do the access to both current thread and task structure via a single pointer. It'll allow for a few more cleanups of the fork code, from which e.g. ia64 could benefit. 2007-02-14[PATCH] sysctl: remove insert_at_head from register_sysctlEric W. Biederman
The semantic effect of insert_at_head is that it would allow new registered sysctl entries to override existing sysctl entries of the same name. Which is pain for caching and the proc interface never implemented. I have done an audit and discovered that none of the current users of register_sysctl care as (excpet for directories) they do not register duplicate sysctl entries. 2007-02-07[POWERPC] 8xx: generic 8xx code arch/powerpc portVitaly Bordug
Including support for non-coherent cache, some mm-related things + relevant field in Kconfig and Makefiles. Also included rheap.o compilation if 8xx is defined. Non-coherent mapping were refined and renamed according to Cristoph Hellwig. Orphaned functions were cleaned up. [Also removed arch/ppc/kernel/dma-mapping.c, because otherwise compiling with ARCH=ppc for a non DMA-cache-coherent platform ends up with two copies of __dma_alloc_coherent etc. -- paulus.] Signed-off-by: Vitaly Bordug <vbordug@ru.mvista.com> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>

2006-12-08[POWERPC] Fix mmap of PCI resource with hack for XBenjamin Herrenschmidt
The powerpc version of pci_resource_to_user() and associated hooks used by /proc/bus/pci and /sys/bus/pci mmap have been broken for some time on machines that don't have a 1:1 mapping of devices (basically on non-PowerMacs) and have PCI devices above 32 bits. This attempts to fix it as well as possible. The rule is supposed to be that pci_resource_to_user() always converts the resources back into a BAR values since that's what the /proc interface was supposed to deal with. However, for X to work on platforms where PCI MMIO is not mapped 1:1, it became a habit of platforms like powerpc to pass "fixed up" values there since X expects to be able to use values from /proc/bus/pci/devices as offsets to mmap of /dev/mem... So we keep that contraption here, causing also /sys/*/resource to expose fully absolute MMIO addresses instead of BAR values, which is ugly, but should still work as long as those are only used to calculate alignment within a page. X is still broken when built 32 bits on machines where PCI MMIO can be above 32-bit space unfortunately. 2006-12-07[PATCH] relocatable kernel: Kallsyms generate relocatable symbolsEric W. Biederman
Print the addresses of non-absolute symbols relative to _text so that ld will generate relocations. Allowing a relocatable kernel to relocate them. We can't actually use the symbol names because kallsyms includes static symbols that are not exported from their object files. Add the _text symbol definitions to the architectures which don't define it otherwise linker will fail. Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2006-12-04[POWERPC] Distinguish POWER6 partition modes and tell userspacePaul Mackerras
This adds code to look at the properties firmware puts in the device tree to determine what compatibility mode the partition is in on POWER6 machines, and set the ELF aux vector AT_HWCAP and AT_PLATFORM entries appropriately. Specifically, we look at the cpu-version property in the cpu node(s). If that contains a "logical" PVR value (of the form 0x0f00000x), we call identify_cpu again with this PVR value. A value of 0x0f000001 indicates the partition is in POWER5+ compatibility mode, and a value of 0x0f000002 indicates "POWER6 architected" mode, with various extensions disabled. We also look for various other properties: ibm, dfp, ibm, purr and ibm, spurr. Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>

2006-11-01[POWERPC] Make alignment exception always check exception tableBenjamin Herrenschmidt
The alignment exception used to only check the exception table for -EFAULT, not for other errors. That opens an oops window if we can coerce the kernel into getting an alignment exception for other reasons in what would normally be a user-protected accessor, which can be done via some of the futex ops. This fixes it by always checking the exception tables. Signed-off-by: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>

2006-10-25[POWERPC] Support feature fixups in vdso'sBenjamin Herrenschmidt
This patch reworks the feature fixup mecanism so vdso's can be fixed up. The main issue was that the construct: .long label (or .llong on 64 bits) will not work in the case of a shared library like the vdso. It will generate an empty placeholder in the fixup table along with a reloc, which is not something we can deal with in the vdso. The idea here (thanks Alan Modra !) is to instead use something like: 1: .long label - 1b That is, the feature fixup tables no longer contain addresses of bits of code to patch, but offsets of such code from the fixup table entry itself. That is properly resolved by ld when building the .so's. I've modified the fixup mecanism generically to use that method for the rest of the kernel as well. Another trick is that the 32 bits vDSO included in the 64 bits kernel need to have a table in the 64 bits format. However, gas does not support 32 bits code with a statement of the form: .llong label - 1b (Or even just .llong label) That is, it cannot emit the right fixup/relocation for the linker to use to assign a 32 bits address to an .llong field. Thus, in the specific case of the 32 bits vdso built as part of the 64 bits kernel, we are using a modified macro that generates: .long 0xffffffff .llong label - 1b Note that is assumes that the value is negative which is enforced by the .lds (those offsets are always negative as the .text is always before the fixup table and gas doesn't support emiting the reloc the other way around).
