2015-02-12all arches, signal: move restart_block to struct task_structAndy Lutomirski
If an attacker can cause a controlled kernel stack overflow, overwriting the restart block is a very juicy exploit target. This is because the restart_block is held in the same memory allocation as the kernel stack. Moving the restart block to struct task_struct prevents this exploit by making the restart_block harder to locate. Note that there are other fields in thread_info that are also easy targets, at least on some architectures. It's also a decent simplification, since the restart code is more or less identical on all architectures. 2015-02-11mm: make FIRST_USER_ADDRESS unsigned long on all archsKirill A. Shutemov
LKP has triggered a compiler warning after my recent patch "mm: account pmd page tables to the process": mm/mmap.c: In function 'exit_mmap': >> mm/mmap.c:2857:2: warning: right shift count >= width of type [enabled by default] The code: > 2857 WARN_ON(mm_nr_pmds(mm) > 2858 round_up(FIRST_USER_ADDRESS, PUD_SIZE) >> PUD_SHIFT); In this, on tile, we have FIRST_USER_ADDRESS defined as 0. round_up() has the same type -- int. PUD_SHIFT. I think the best way to fix it is to define FIRST_USER_ADDRESS as unsigned long. On every arch for consistency. Signed-off-by: Kirill A. 2014-11-19mm: Make arch_unmap()/bprm_mm_init() available to all architecturesDave Hansen
The x86 MPX patch set calls arch_unmap() and arch_bprm_mm_init() from fs/exec.c, so we need at least a stub for them in all architectures. They are only called under an #ifdef for CONFIG_MMU=y, so we can at least restict this to architectures with MMU support. blackfin/c6x have no MMU support, so do not call arch_unmap(). They also do not include mm_hooks.h or mmu_context.h at all and do not need to be touched. s390, um and unicore32 do not use asm-generic/mm_hooks.h, so got their own arch_unmap() versions. (I also moved um's arch_dup_mmap() to be closer to the other mm_hooks.h functions). xtensa only includes mm_hooks when MMU=y, which should be fine since arch_unmap() is called only from MMU=y code. For the rest, we use the stub copies of these functions in asm-generic/mm_hook.h. I cross compiled defconfigs for cris (to check NOMMU) and s390 to make sure that this works. I also checked a 64-bit build of UML and all my normal x86 builds including PARAVIRT on and off. 2014-10-13um: delete unnecessary bootmem struct page arrayHonggang Li
1) uml kernel bootmem managed through bootmem_data->node_bootmem_map, not the struct page array, so the array is unnecessary. 2) the bootmem struct page array has been pointed by a *local* pointer, struct page *map, in init_maps function. The array can be accessed only in init_maps's scope. As a result, uml kernel wastes about 1% of total memory. 2014-08-08arm64,ia64,ppc,s390,sh,tile,um,x86,mm: remove default gate areaAndy Lutomirski
The core mm code will provide a default gate area based on FIXADDR_USER_START and FIXADDR_USER_END if !defined(__HAVE_ARCH_GATE_AREA) && defined(AT_SYSINFO_EHDR). This default is only useful for ia64. arm64, ppc, s390, sh, tile, 64-bit UML, and x86_32 have their own code just to disable it. arm, 32-bit UML, and x86_64 have gate areas, but they have their own implementations. This gets rid of the default and moves the code into ia64. This should save some code on architectures without a gate area: it's now possible to inline the gate_area functions in the default case. 2014-04-25mm: split 'tlb_flush_mmu()' into tlb flushing and memory freeing partsLinus Torvalds
The mmu-gather operation 'tlb_flush_mmu()' has done two things: the actual tlb flush operation, and the batched freeing of the pages that the TLB entries pointed at. This splits the operation into separate phases, so that the forced batched flushing done by zap_pte_range() can now do the actual TLB flush while still holding the page table lock, but delay the batched freeing of all the pages to after the lock has been dropped. This in turn allows us to avoid a race condition between set_page_dirty() (as called by zap_pte_range() when it finds a dirty shared memory pte) and page_mkclean(): because we now flush all the dirty page data from the TLB's while holding the pte lock, page_mkclean() will be held up walking the (recently cleaned) page tables until after the TLB entries have been flushed from all CPU's. 2013-11-17um: Make stack trace reliable against kernel mode faultsRichard Weinberger
As UML uses an alternative signal stack we cannot use the current stack pointer for stack dumping if UML itself dies by SIGSEGV. To bypass this issue we save regs taken from mcontext in our segv handler into thread_struct and use these regs to obtain the stack pointer in show_stack(). 2013-09-07um: Cleanup SIGTERM handlingRichard Weinberger
Richard reported that some UML processes survive if the UML main process receives a SIGTERM. This issue was caused by a wrongly placed signal(SIGTERM, SIG_DFL) in init_new_thread_signals(). It disabled the UML exit handler accidently for some processes. The correct solution is to disable the fatal handler for all UML helper threads/processes. Such that last_ditch_exit() does not get called multiple times and all processes can exit due to SIGTERM. Reported-and-tested-by: Richard W.M. 2013-09-07um: Implement probe_kernel_read()Richard Weinberger
UML needs it's own probe_kernel_read() to handle kernel mode faults correctly. The implementation uses mincore() on the host side to detect whether a page is owned by the UML kernel process. This fixes also a possible crash when sysrq-t is used. Starting with 3.10 sysrq-t calls probe_kernel_read() to read details from the kernel workers. As kernel worker are completely async pointers may turn NULL while reading them. 2013-08-16Fix TLB gather virtual address range invalidation corner casesLinus Torvalds
Ben Tebulin reported: "Since v3.7.2 on two independent machines a very specific Git repository fails in 9/10 cases on git-fsck due to an SHA1/memory failures. This only occurs on a very specific repository and can be reproduced stably on two independent laptops. Git mailing list ran out of ideas and for me this looks like some very exotic kernel issue" and bisected the failure to the backport of commit 53a59fc67f97 ("mm: limit mmu_gather batching to fix soft lockups on !CONFIG_PREEMPT"). That commit itself is not actually buggy, but what it does is to make it much more likely to hit the partial TLB invalidation case, since it introduces a new case in tlb_next_batch() that previously only ever happened when running out of memory. The real bug is that the TLB gather virtual memory range setup is subtly buggered. It was introduced in commit 597e1c3580b7 ("mm/mmu_gather: enable tlb flush range in generic mmu_gather"), and the range handling was already fixed at least once in commit e6c495a96ce0 ("mm: fix the TLB range flushed when __tlb_remove_page() runs out of slots"), but that fix was not complete. The problem with the TLB gather virtual address range is that it isn't set up by the initial tlb_gather_mmu() initialization (which didn't get the TLB range information), but it is set up ad-hoc later by the functions that actually flush the TLB. And so any such case that forgot to update the TLB range entries would potentially miss TLB invalidates. Rather than try to figure out exactly which particular ad-hoc range setup was missing (I personally suspect it's the hugetlb case in zap_huge_pmd(), which didn't have the same logic as zap_pte_range() did), this patch just gets rid of the problem at the source: make the TLB range information available to tlb_gather_mmu(), and initialize it when initializing all the other tlb gather fields. This makes the patch larger, but conceptually much simpler. And the end result is much more understandable; even if you want to play games with partial ranges when invalidating the TLB contents in chunks, now the range information is always there, and anybody who doesn't want to bother with it won't introduce subtle bugs. Ben verified that this fixes his problem. 2013-04-03nohz: Rename CONFIG_NO_HZ to CONFIG_NO_HZ_COMMONFrederic Weisbecker
We are planning to convert the dynticks Kconfig options layout into a choice menu. The user must be able to easily pick any of the following implementations: constant periodic tick, idle dynticks, full dynticks. As this implies a mutual exclusion, the two dynticks implementions need to converge on the selection of a common Kconfig option in order to ease the sharing of a common infrastructure. It would thus seem pretty natural to reuse CONFIG_NO_HZ to that end. It already implements all the idle dynticks code and the full dynticks depends on all that code for now. So ideally the choice menu would propose CONFIG_NO_HZ_IDLE and CONFIG_NO_HZ_EXTENDED then both would select CONFIG_NO_HZ. On the other hand we want to stay backward compatible: if CONFIG_NO_HZ is set in an older config file, we want to enable CONFIG_NO_HZ_IDLE by default. But we can't afford both at the same time or we run into a circular dependency: 1) CONFIG_NO_HZ_IDLE and CONFIG_NO_HZ_EXTENDED both select CONFIG_NO_HZ 2) If CONFIG_NO_HZ is set, we default to CONFIG_NO_HZ_IDLE We might be able to support that from Kconfig/Kbuild but it may not be wise to introduce such a confusing behaviour. So to solve this, create a new CONFIG_NO_HZ_COMMON option which gathers the common code between idle and full dynticks (that common code for now is simply the idle dynticks code) and select it from their referring Kconfig. Then we'll later create CONFIG_NO_HZ_IDLE and map CONFIG_NO_HZ to it for backward compatibility. In order to promote interoperability between userspace tracers and ftrace, add a trace_clock that reports raw TSC values which will then be recorded in the ring buffer. 2012-09-27um: Preinclude include/linux/kern_levels.hGeert Uytterhoeven
The userspace part of UML uses the asm-offsets.h generator mechanism to create definitions for UM_KERN_<LEVEL> that match the in-kernel KERN_<LEVEL> constant definitions. As of commit 04d2c8c83d0e3ac5f78aeede51babb3236200112 ("printk: convert the format for KERN_<LEVEL> to a 2 byte pattern"), KERN_<LEVEL> is no longer expanded to the literal '"<LEVEL>"', but to '"\001" "LEVEL"', i.e. it contains two parts. However, the combo of DEFINE_STR() in arch/x86/um/shared/sysdep/kernel-offsets.h and sed-y in Kbuild doesn't support string literals consisting of multiple parts. Hence for all UM_KERN_<LEVEL> definitions, only the SOH character is retained in the actual definition, while the remainder ends up in the comment. E.g. in include/generated/asm-offsets.h we get #define UM_KERN_INFO "\001" /* "6" KERN_INFO */ instead of #define UM_KERN_INFO "\001" "6" /* KERN_INFO */ This causes spurious '^A' output in some kernel messages: Calibrating delay loop... 4640.76 BogoMIPS (lpj=23203840) pid_max: default: 32768 minimum: 301 Mount-cache hash table entries: 256 ^AChecking that host ptys support output SIGIO...Yes ^AChecking that host ptys support SIGIO on close...No, enabling workaround ^AUsing 2.6 host AIO NET: Registered protocol family 16 bio: create slab <bio-0> at 0 Switching to clocksource itimer To fix this: - Move the mapping from UM_KERN_<LEVEL> to KERN_<LEVEL> from arch/um/include/shared/common-offsets.h to arch/um/include/shared/user.h, which is preincluded for all userspace parts, - Preinclude include/linux/kern_levels.h for all userspace parts, to obtain the in-kernel KERN_<LEVEL> constant definitions. This doesn't violate the kernel/userspace separation, as include/linux/kern_levels.h is self-contained and doesn't expose any other kernel internals. - Remove the now unused STR() and DEFINE_STR() macros.
