Make it possible to restore a hibernation image on x86_64 with the help of a
kernel different from the one in the image.
The idea is to split the core restoration code into two separate parts and to
place each of them in a different page. The first part belongs to the boot
kernel and is executed as the last step of the image kernel's memory
restoration procedure. Before being executed, it is relocated to a safe page
that won't be overwritten while copying the image kernel pages.
The final operation performed by it is a jump to the second part of the core
restoration code that belongs to the image kernel and has just been restored.
This code makes the CPU switch to the image kernel's page tables and restores
the state of general purpose registers (including the stack pointer) from
before the hibernation.
The main issue with this idea is that in order to jump to the second part of
the core restoration code the boot kernel needs to know its address.
However, this address may be passed to it in the image header. Namely, the
part of the image header previously used for checking if the version of the
image kernel is correct can be replaced with some architecture specific data
that will allow the boot kernel to jump to the right address within the image
kernel. These data should also be used for checking if the image kernel is
compatible with the boot kernel (as far as the memory restroration procedure
is concerned). It can be done, for example, with the help of a "magic" value
that has to be equal in both kernels, so that they can be regarded as
compatible.

x86_64 uses 2M page table entries to map its 1-1 kernel space. We also
implement the virtual memmap using 2M page table entries. So there is no
additional runtime overhead over FLATMEM, initialisation is slightly more
complex. As FLATMEM still references memory to obtain the mem_map pointer and
SPARSEMEM_VMEMMAP uses a compile time constant, SPARSEMEM_VMEMMAP should be
superior.
With this SPARSEMEM becomes the most efficient way of handling virt_to_page,
pfn_to_page and friends for UP, SMP and NUMA on x86_64.

This reverts commit 34feb2c83beb3bdf13535a36770f7e50b47ef299.
Suresh Siddha points out that this one breaks the fundamental
requirement that you cannot free page table pages before the TLB caches
are flushed. The quicklists do not give the same kinds of guarantees
that the mmu_gather structure does, at least not in NUMA configurations.

This adds caching of pgds and puds, pmds, pte. That way we can avoid costly
zeroing and initialization of special mappings in the pgd.
A second quicklist is useful to separate out PGD handling. We can carry the
initialized pgds over to the next process needing them.
Also clean up the pgd_list handling to use regular list macros. There is no
need anymore to avoid the lru field.
Move the add/removal of the pgds to the pgdlist into the constructor /
destructor. That way the implementation is congruent with i386.

This patch modifies the x86_64 kernel so that it can be loaded and run
at any 2M aligned address, below 512G. The technique used is to
compile the decompressor with -fPIC and modify it so the decompressor
is fully relocatable. For the main kernel the page tables are
modified so the kernel remains at the same virtual address. In
addition a variable phys_base is kept that holds the physical address
the kernel is loaded at. __pa_symbol is modified to add that when
we take the address of a kernel symbol.
When loaded with a normal bootloader the decompressor will decompress
the kernel to 2M and it will run there. This both ensures the
relocation code is always working, and makes it easier to use 2M
pages for the kernel and the cpu.

As Andi pointed out: CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA only disables the ISA DMA
channel management. Other functionality may still expect GFP_DMA to
provide memory below 16M. So we need to make sure that CONFIG_ZONE_DMA is
set independent of CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA. Undo the modifications to
mm/Kconfig where we made ZONE_DMA dependent on GENERIC_ISA_DMA and set
theses explicitly in each arches Kconfig.
Reviews must occur for each arch in order to determine if ZONE_DMA can be
switched off. It can only be switched off if we know that all devices
supported by a platform are capable of performing DMA transfers to all of
memory (Some arches already support this: uml, avr32, sh sh64, parisc and
IA64/Altix).
In order to switch ZONE_DMA off conditionally, one would have to establish
a scheme by which one can assure that no drivers are enabled that are only
capable of doing I/O to a part of memory, or one needs to provide an
alternate means of performing an allocation from a specific range of memory
(like provided by alloc_pages_range()) and insure that all drivers use that
call. In that case the arches alloc_dma_coherent() may need to be modified
to call alloc_pages_range() instead of relying on GFP_DMA.

one of my boxes didnt boot the 2.6.20-rc1-rt0 kernel rpm, it hung during
early bootup. After an hour or two of happy debugging i narrowed it down
to the CALGARY_IOMMU_ENABLED_BY_DEFAULT option, which was freshly added
to 2.6.20 via the x86_64 tree and /enabled by default/.
commit bff6547bb6a4e82c399d74e7fba78b12d2f162ed claims:
[PATCH] Calgary: allow compiling Calgary in but not using it by default
This patch makes it possible to compile Calgary in but not use it by
default. In this mode, use 'iommu=calgary' to activate it.
but the change does not actually practice it:

default y
depends on CALGARY_IOMMU
help
Should Calgary be enabled by default? if you choose 'y', Calgary
will be used (if it exists). If you choose 'n', Calgary will not be
used even if it exists. If you choose 'n' and would like to use
Calgary anyway, pass 'iommu=calgary' on the kernel command line.
If unsure, say Y.
it's both 'default y', and says "If unsure, say Y". Clearly not a typo.

This facility provides three entry points:
ilog2() Log base 2 of unsigned long
ilog2_u32() Log base 2 of u32
ilog2_u64() Log base 2 of u64
These facilities can either be used inside functions on dynamic data:
int do_something(long q)
{
...;
y = ilog2(x)
...;
}
Or can be used to statically initialise global variables with constant values:
unsigned n = ilog2(27);
When performing static initialisation, the compiler will report "error:
initializer element is not constant" if asked to take a log of zero or of
something not reducible to a constant. They treat negative numbers as
unsigned.
When not dealing with a constant, they fall back to using fls() which permits
them to use arch-specific log calculation instructions - such as BSR on
x86/x86_64 or SCAN on FRV - if available.

This makes x86-64 use the generic BUG machinery.
The main advantage in using the generic BUG machinery for x86-64 is that
the inlined overhead of BUG is just the ud2a instruction; the file+line
information are no longer inlined into the instruction stream. This
reduces cache pollution.

In an effort to make kprobe modules more portable, here is a patch that:
o Introduces the "symbol_name" field to struct kprobe.
The symbol->address resolution now happens in the kernel in an
architecture agnostic manner. 64-bit powerpc users no longer have
to specify the ".symbols"
o Introduces the "offset" field to struct kprobe to allow a user to
specify an offset into a symbol.
o The legacy mechanism of specifying the kprobe.addr is still supported.
However, if both the kprobe.addr and kprobe.symbol_name are specified,
probe registration fails with an -EINVAL.
o The symbol resolution code uses kallsyms_lookup_name(). So
CONFIG_KPROBES now depends on CONFIG_KALLSYMS
o Apparantly kprobe modules were the only legitimate out-of-tree user of
the kallsyms_lookup_name() EXPORT. Now that the symbol resolution
happens in-kernel, remove the EXPORT as suggested by Christoph Hellwig
o Modify tcp_probe.c that uses the kprobe interface so as to make it
work on multiple platforms (in its earlier form, the code wouldn't
work, say, on powerpc)

'reload' which allows manually reloading ucode. Another is
'processor_flags', which exports processor flags, so we can write tools to
check if CPU has latest ucode. Also add suspend/resume and CPU hotplug
support.

Make ZONE_DMA32 optional
- Add #ifdefs around ZONE_DMA32 specific code and definitions.
- Add CONFIG_ZONE_DMA32 config option and use that for x86_64
that alone needs this zone.
- Remove the use of CONFIG_DMA_IS_DMA32 and CONFIG_DMA_IS_NORMAL
for ia64 and fix up the way per node ZVCs are calculated.
- Fall back to prior GFP_ZONEMASK of 0x03 if there is no
DMA32 zone.

kexec has been marked experimental for a year now and all
of the serious problems have been worked through. So it
is time (if not past time) to remove the experimental mark.
