2011-10-31block: add export.h to files using EXPORT_SYMBOL/THIS_MODULE macrosPaul Gortmaker
These files were getting <linux/module.h> via an implicit include path, but we want to crush those out of existence since they cost time during compiles of processing thousands of lines of headers for no reason. 2011-09-12block: remove support for bio remapping from ->make_requestChristoph Hellwig
There is very little benefit in allowing to let a ->make_request instance update the bios device and sector and loop around it in __generic_make_request when we can archive the same through calling generic_make_request from the driver and letting the loop in generic_make_request handle it. Note that various drivers got the return value from ->make_request and returned non-zero values for errors. 2010-11-10block: remove REQ_HARDBARRIERChristoph Hellwig
REQ_HARDBARRIER is dead now, so remove the leftovers. What's left at this point is: - various checks inside the block layer. - sanity checks in bio based drivers. - now unused bio_empty_barrier helper. - Xen blockfront use of BLKIF_OP_WRITE_BARRIER - it's dead for a while, but Xen really needs to sort out it's barrier situaton. - setting of ordered tags in uas - dead code copied from old scsi drivers. - scsi different retry for barriers - it's dead and should have been removed when flushes were converted to FS requests. - blktrace handling of barriers - removed. Someone who knows blktrace better should add support for REQ_FLUSH and REQ_FUA, though. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <jaxboe@fusionio.com>

2010-10-15llseek: automatically add .llseek fopArnd Bergmann
All file_operations should get a .llseek operation so we can make nonseekable_open the default for future file operations without a .llseek pointer. The three cases that we can automatically detect are no_llseek, seq_lseek and default_llseek. For cases where we can we can automatically prove that the file offset is always ignored, we use noop_llseek, which maintains the current behavior of not returning an error from a seek. New drivers should normally not use noop_llseek but instead use no_llseek and call nonseekable_open at open time. Existing drivers can be converted to do the same when the maintainer knows for certain that no user code relies on calling seek on the device file. The generated code is often incorrectly indented and right now contains comments that clarify for each added line why a specific variant was chosen. In the version that gets submitted upstream, the comments will be gone and I will manually fix the indentation, because there does not seem to be a way to do that using coccinelle. Some amount of new code is currently sitting in linux-next that should get the same modifications, which I will do at the end of the merge window. Many thanks to Julia Lawall for helping me learn to write a semantic patch that does all this. ===== begin semantic patch ===== // This adds an llseek= method to all file operations, // as a preparation for making no_llseek the default. // // The rules are // - use no_llseek explicitly if we do nonseekable_open // - use seq_lseek for sequential files // - use default_llseek if we know we access f_pos // - use noop_llseek if we know we don't access f_pos, // but we still want to allow users to call lseek // @ open1 exists @ identifier nested_open; @@ nested_open(...) { <+... nonseekable_open(...) ...+> } @ open exists@ identifier open_f; identifier i, f; identifier open1.nested_open; @@ int open_f(struct inode *i, struct file *f) { <+... 2010-10-05block: autoconvert trivial BKL users to private mutexArnd Bergmann
The block device drivers have all gained new lock_kernel calls from a recent pushdown, and some of the drivers were already using the BKL before. This turns the BKL into a set of per-driver mutexes. Still need to check whether this is safe to do. file=$1 name=$2 if grep -q lock_kernel ${file} ; then if grep -q 'include.*linux.mutex.h' ${file} ; then sed -i '/include.*<linux\/smp_lock.h>/d' ${file} else sed -i 's/include.*<linux\/smp_lock.h>.*$/include <linux\/mutex.h>/g' ${file} fi sed -i ${file} \ -e "/^#include.*linux.mutex.h/,$ { 1,/^\(static\|int\|long\)/ { /^\(static\|int\|long\)/istatic DEFINE_MUTEX(${name}_mutex); } }" \ -e "s/\(un\)*lock_kernel\>[ ]*()/mutex_\1lock(\&${name}_mutex)/g" \ -e '/[ ]*cycle_kernel_lock();/d' else sed -i -e '/include.*\<smp_lock.h\>/d' ${file} \ -e '/cycle_kernel_lock()/d' fi Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de>
2010-08-07block: push down BKL into .open and .releaseArnd Bergmann
The open and release block_device_operations are currently called with the BKL held. In order to change that, we must first make sure that all drivers that currently rely on this have no regressions. This blindly pushes the BKL into all .open and .release operations for all block drivers to prepare for the next step. The drivers can subsequently replace the BKL with their own locks or remove it completely when it can be shown that it is not needed. The functions blkdev_get and blkdev_put are the only remaining users of the big kernel lock in the block layer, besides a few uses in the ioctl code, none of which need to serialize with blkdev_{get,put}. Most of these two functions is also under the protection of bdev->bd_mutex, including the actual calls to ->open and ->release, and the common code does not access any global data structures that need the BKL. 2010-08-07block: unify flags for struct bio and struct requestChristoph Hellwig
Remove the current bio flags and reuse the request flags for the bio, too. This allows to more easily trace the type of I/O from the filesystem down to the block driver. There were two flags in the bio that were missing in the requests: BIO_RW_UNPLUG and BIO_RW_AHEAD. Also I've renamed two request flags that had a superflous RW in them. Note that the flags are in bio.h despite having the REQ_ name - as blkdev.h includes bio.h that is the only way to go for now. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2008-10-21[PATCH] beginning of methods conversionAl Viro
To keep the size of changesets sane we split the switch by drivers; to keep the damn thing bisectable we do the following: 1) rename the affected methods, add ones with correct prototypes, make (few) callers handle both. That's this changeset. 2) for each driver convert to new methods. *ALL* drivers are converted in this series. 3) kill the old (renamed) methods. Note that it _is_ a flagday; all in-tree drivers are converted and by the end of this series no trace of old methods remain. The only reason why we do that this way is to keep the damn thing bisectable and allow per-driver debugging if anything goes wrong. New methods: open(bdev, mode) release(disk, mode) ioctl(bdev, mode, cmd, arg) /* Called without BKL */ compat_ioctl(bdev, mode, cmd, arg) locked_ioctl(bdev, mode, cmd, arg) /* Called with BKL, legacy */ Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2008-10-20x86: sysfs: kill owner field from attributeParag Warudkar
Tejun's commit 7b595756ec1f49e0049a9e01a1298d53a7faaa15 made sysfs attribute->owner unnecessary. But the field was left in the structure to ease the merge. It's been over a year since that change and it is now time to start killing attribute->owner along with its users - one arch at a time! This patch is attempt #1 to get rid of attribute->owner only for CONFIG_X86_64 or CONFIG_X86_32 . We will deal with other arches later on as and when possible - avr32 will be the next since that is something I can test. Compile (make allyesconfig / make allmodconfig / custom config) and boot tested. akpm: the idea is that we put the declaration of sttribute.owner inside `#ifndef CONFIG_X86'. But that proved to be too ambitious for now because new usages kept on turning up in subsystem trees. 2008-10-09block: move stats from disk to part0Tejun Heo
Move stats related fields - stamp, in_flight, dkstats - from disk to part0 and unify stat handling such that... * part_stat_*() now updates part0 together if the specified partition is not part0. ie. part_stat_*() are now essentially all_stat_*(). * {disk|all}_stat_*() are gone. * part_round_stats() is updated similary. It handles part0 stats automatically and disk_round_stats() is killed. * part_{inc|dec}_in_fligh() is implemented which automatically updates part0 stats for parts other than part0. * disk_map_sector_rcu() is updated to return part0 if no part matches. Combined with the above changes, this makes NULL special case handling in callers unnecessary. * Separate stats show code paths for disk are collapsed into part stats show code paths. * Rename disk_stat_lock/unlock() to part_stat_lock/unlock() While at it, reposition stat handling macros a bit and add missing parentheses around macro parameters. 2008-10-09block: move capacity from disk to part0Tejun Heo

2008-10-09block: implement and use {disk|part}_to_dev()Tejun Heo
Implement {disk|part}_to_dev() and use them to access generic device instead of directly dereferencing {disk|part}->dev. To make sure no user is left behind, rename generic devices fields to __dev. This is in preparation of unifying partition 0 handling with other partitions. Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <jens.axboe@oracle.com>
2008-10-09block: fix diskstats accessTejun Heo
There are two variants of stat functions - ones prefixed with double underbars which don't care about preemption and ones without which disable preemption before manipulating per-cpu counters. It's unclear whether the underbarred ones assume that preemtion is disabled on entry as some callers don't do that. This patch unifies diskstats access by implementing disk_stat_lock() and disk_stat_unlock() which take care of both RCU (for partition access) and preemption (for per-cpu counter access). diskstats access should always be enclosed between the two functions. As such, there's no need for the versions which disables preemption. They're removed and double underbars ones are renamed to drop the underbars. As an extra argument is added, there's no danger of using the old version unconverted. disk_stat_lock() uses get_cpu() and returns the cpu index and all diskstat functions which access per-cpu counters now has @cpu argument to help RT. This change adds RCU or preemption operations at some places but also collapses several preemption ops into one at others. Overall, the performance difference should be negligible as all involved ops are very lightweight per-cpu ones. 2008-10-09block: fix disk->part[] dereferencing raceTejun Heo
disk->part[] is protected by its matching bdev's lock. However, non-critical accesses like collecting stats and printing out sysfs and proc information used to be performed without any locking. As partitions can come and go dynamically, partitions can go away underneath those non-critical accesses. As some of those accesses are writes, this theoretically can lead to silent corruption. This patch fixes the race by using RCU for the partition array and dev reference counter to hold partitions. * Rename disk->part[] to disk->__part[] to make sure no one outside genhd layer proper accesses it directly. * Use RCU for disk->__part[] dereferencing. * Implement disk_{get|put}_part() which can be used to get and put partitions from gendisk respectively. * Iterators are implemented to help iterate through all partitions safely. * Functions which require RCU readlock are marked with _rcu suffix. * Use disk_put_part() in __blkdev_put() instead of directly putting the contained kobject. Reported by Thomas Graf.
