2011-02-21Input: uinput - use memdup_user() and friendsDmitry Torokhov
Instead of open-coding copying of data structures from userspace use memdup_user() and strndup_user(). Note that this introduces change in behavior because driver used to truncate 'phys' longer than 1024 bytes, but now it will refuse to set 'phys' that long. Arguably trying to set such 'phys' is suspect anyways. Signed-off-by: Dmitry Torokhov <dtor@mail.ru>

2010-12-20Input: introduce device propertiesHenrik Rydberg
Today, userspace sets up an input device based on the data it emits. This is not always enough; a tablet and a touchscreen may emit exactly the same data, for instance, but the former should be set up with a pointer whereas the latter does not need to. Recently, a new type of touchpad has emerged where the buttons are under the pad, which changes logic without changing the emitted data. This patch introduces a new ioctl, EVIOCGPROP, which enables user access to a set of device properties useful during setup. The properties are given as a bitmap in the same fashion as the event types, and are also made available via sysfs, uevent and /proc/bus/input/devices. It is not allowed to call input_free_device() after calling input_unregister_device() because input devices are refcounted and unregister will free the device if we were holding he last referenc. The preferred style in input/ is to make input_register_device() the last function in the probe which can fail. That way we don't need to call input_unregister_device(). Also do not need to call input_set_drvdata() as nothing in the driver uses the data. Signed-off-by: Dan Carpenter <error27@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Dmitry Torokhov <dtor@mail.ru>

2010-10-15llseek: automatically add .llseek fopArnd Bergmann
All file_operations should get a .llseek operation so we can make nonseekable_open the default for future file operations without a .llseek pointer. The three cases that we can automatically detect are no_llseek, seq_lseek and default_llseek. For cases where we can we can automatically prove that the file offset is always ignored, we use noop_llseek, which maintains the current behavior of not returning an error from a seek. New drivers should normally not use noop_llseek but instead use no_llseek and call nonseekable_open at open time. Existing drivers can be converted to do the same when the maintainer knows for certain that no user code relies on calling seek on the device file. The generated code is often incorrectly indented and right now contains comments that clarify for each added line why a specific variant was chosen. In the version that gets submitted upstream, the comments will be gone and I will manually fix the indentation, because there does not seem to be a way to do that using coccinelle. Some amount of new code is currently sitting in linux-next that should get the same modifications, which I will do at the end of the merge window. Many thanks to Julia Lawall for helping me learn to write a semantic patch that does all this. ===== begin semantic patch ===== // This adds an llseek= method to all file operations, // as a preparation for making no_llseek the default. // // The rules are // - use no_llseek explicitly if we do nonseekable_open // - use seq_lseek for sequential files // - use default_llseek if we know we access f_pos // - use noop_llseek if we know we don't access f_pos, // but we still want to allow users to call lseek // @ open1 exists @ identifier nested_open; @@ nested_open(...) { <+... nonseekable_open(...) ...+> } @ open exists@ identifier open_f; identifier i, f; identifier open1.nested_open; @@ int open_f(struct inode *i, struct file *f) { <+... 2010-10-05drivers: autoconvert trivial BKL users to private mutexArnd Bergmann
All these files use the big kernel lock in a trivial way to serialize their private file operations, typically resulting from an earlier semi-automatic pushdown from VFS. None of these drivers appears to want to lock against other code, and they all use the BKL as the top-level lock in their file operations, meaning that there is no lock-order inversion problem. Consequently, we can remove the BKL completely, replacing it with a per-file mutex in every case. Using a scripted approach means we can avoid typos. These drivers do not seem to be under active maintainance from my brief investigation. Apologies to those maintainers that I have missed. file=$1 name=$2 if grep -q lock_kernel ${file} ; then if grep -q 'include.*linux.mutex.h' ${file} ; then sed -i '/include.*<linux\/smp_lock.h>/d' ${file} else sed -i 's/include.*<linux\/smp_lock.h>.*$/include <linux\/mutex.h>/g' ${file} fi sed -i ${file} \ -e "/^#include.*linux.mutex.h/,$ { 1,/^\(static\|int\|long\)/ { /^\(static\|int\|long\)/istatic DEFINE_MUTEX(${name}_mutex); } }" \ -e "s/\(un\)*lock_kernel\>[ ]*()/mutex_\1lock(\&${name}_mutex)/g" \ -e '/[ ]*cycle_kernel_lock();/d' else sed -i -e '/include.*\<smp_lock.h\>/d' ${file} \ -e '/cycle_kernel_lock()/d' fi Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de>

2010-08-12ASoC: multi-component - ASoC Multi-Component SupportLiam Girdwood
This patch extends the ASoC API to allow sound cards to have more than one CODEC and more than one platform DMA controller. This is achieved by dividing some current ASoC structures that contain both driver data and device data into structures that only either contain device data or driver data. i.e. struct snd_soc_codec ---> struct snd_soc_codec (device data) +-> struct snd_soc_codec_driver (driver data) struct snd_soc_platform ---> struct snd_soc_platform (device data) +-> struct snd_soc_platform_driver (driver data) struct snd_soc_dai ---> struct snd_soc_dai (device data) +-> struct snd_soc_dai_driver (driver data) struct snd_soc_device ---> deleted This now allows ASoC to be more tightly aligned with the Linux driver model and also means that every ASoC codec, platform and (platform) DAI is a kernel device. ASoC component private data is now stored as device private data. The ASoC sound card struct snd_soc_card has also been updated to store lists of it's components rather than a pointer to a codec and platform. The PCM runtime struct soc_pcm_runtime now has pointers to all its components. This patch adds DAPM support for ASoC multi-component and removes struct snd_soc_socdev from DAPM core. All DAPM calls are now made on a card, codec or runtime PCM level basis rather than using snd_soc_socdev. Other notable multi-component changes:- * Stream operations now de-reference less structures. * close_delayed work() now runs on a DAI basis rather than looping all DAIs in a card. * PM suspend()/resume() operations can now handle N CODECs and Platforms per sound card. * Added soc_bind_dai_link() to bind the component devices to the sound card. * Added soc_dai_link_probe() and soc_dai_link_remove() to probe and remove DAI link components. * sysfs entries can now be registered per component per card. * snd_soc_new_pcms() functionailty rolled into dai_link_probe(). * snd_soc_register_codec() now does all the codec list and mutex init. This patch changes the probe() and remove() of the CODEC drivers as follows:- o Make CODEC driver a platform driver o Moved all struct snd_soc_codec list, mutex, etc initialiasation to core. o Removed all static codec pointers (drivers now support > 1 codec dev) o snd_soc_register_pcms() now done by core. o snd_soc_register_dai() folded into snd_soc_register_codec(). 2010-08-11param: use ops in struct kernel_param, rather than get and set fns directlyRusty Russell
This is more kernel-ish, saves some space, and also allows us to expand the ops without breaking all the callers who are happy for the new members to be NULL. The few places which defined their own param types are changed to the new scheme (more which crept in recently fixed in following patches). Since we're touching them anyway, we change get() and set() to take a const struct kernel_param (which they really are). This causes some harmless warnings until we fix them (in following patches). To reduce churn, module_param_call creates the ops struct so the callers don't have to change (and casts the functions to reduce warnings). The modern version which takes an ops struct is called module_param_cb.
