2011-08-04e1000e: minor re-order of #include filesBruce Allan
The recent commit a6b7a407 when back-ported to the out-of-tree e1000e driver caused a compilation error on older kernels which required a re-ordering of the #include files. This cosmetic patch syncs the two drivers for easier maintainability. 2011-08-04intel drivers: repair missing flush operationsJesse Brandeburg
after review of all intel drivers, found several instances where drivers had the incorrect pattern of: memory mapped write(); delay(); which should always be: memory mapped write(); write flush(); /* aka memory mapped read */ delay(); explanation: The reason for including the flush is that writes can be held (posted) in PCI/PCIe bridges, but the read always has to complete synchronously and therefore has to flush all pending writes to a device. If a write is held and followed by a delay, the delay means nothing because the write may not have reached hardware (maybe even not until the next read) Signed-off-by: Jesse Brandeburg <jesse.brandeburg@intel.com> Tested-by: Aaron Brown <aaron.f.brown@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Jeff Kirsher <jeffrey.t.kirsher@intel.com>

2011-04-29net/igb/e1000/e1000e: more robust ethtool duplex/speed configurationDavid Decotigny
This makes sure that one cannot request a 99Mbps full-duplex and get a 100Mbps half-duplex configuration in return due to the way the speed/duplex parameters are handled internally. Tested: e1000 works Signed-off-by: David Decotigny <decot@google.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-04-29ethtool: cosmetic: Use ethtool ethtool_cmd_speed APIDavid Decotigny
This updates the network drivers so that they don't access the ethtool_cmd::speed field directly, but use ethtool_cmd_speed() instead. For most of the drivers, these changes are purely cosmetic and don't fix any problem, such as for those 1GbE/10GbE drivers that indirectly call their own ethtool get_settings()/mii_ethtool_gset(). The changes are meant to enforce code consistency and provide robustness with future larger throughputs, at the expense of a few CPU cycles for each ethtool operation. All drivers compiled with make allyesconfig ion x86_64 have been updated. Tested: make allyesconfig on x86_64 + e1000e/bnx2x work Signed-off-by: David Decotigny <decot@google.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-04-29ethtool: Use full 32 bit speed range in ethtool's set_settingsDavid Decotigny
This makes sure the ethtool's set_settings() callback of network drivers don't ignore the 16 most significant bits when ethtool calls their set_settings(). All drivers compiled with make allyesconfig on x86_64 have been updated. Signed-off-by: David Decotigny <decot@google.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-04-27e1000e: implement ethtool set_phys_idBruce Allan
Based on a patch from Stephen Hemminger <shemminger@vyatta.com>. The new ethtool set_phys_id takes over controlling the LED for identifying boards. This fixes the lockout during that period. For this device lots of extra infrastructure can also be removed by using set_phys_id. v2: - return blink frequency for parts that do not support blink in h/w - add blink_led function pointers for devices that do support blink in h/w to cleanup the test for this functionality Signed-off-by: Bruce Allan <bruce.w.allan@intel.com> Cc: Stephen Hemminger <shemminger@vyatta.com> Tested-by: Aaron Brown <aaron.f.brown@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Jeff Kirsher <jeffrey.t.kirsher@intel.com>

2011-04-13e1000e: convert short duration msleep() to usleep_range()Bruce Allan
With durations less than 20ms, the jiffies or legacy timer backed msleep() may sleep ~20ms which might not be what the caller expects. Instead, it is recommended to use the hrtimers backed usleep_range(). For more, see Documentation/timers/timers-howto.txt. Issues reported by checkpatch. In addition, remove unnecessary sleep in e1000e_write_nvm_spi(). 2011-01-09e1000e: power off PHY after reset when interface is downBruce Allan
Some Phys supported by the driver do not remain powered off across a reset of the device when the interface is down, e.g. on 82571, but not on 82574. This patch powers down (only when WoL is disabled) the PHY after a reset if the interface is down and the ethtool diagnostics are not currently running. The ethtool diagnostic function required a minor re-factor as a result, and the e1000_[get|put]_hw_control() functions are renamed since they are no longer static to netdev.c as they are needed by the ethtool diagnostics. A couple minor whitespace issues were cleaned up, too. 2010-05-12e1000e: bad state after running ethtool diagnostics with AMT enabledBruce Allan
When running ethtool online diagnostics with no open interface, there is a short period of time where the driver relinquishes control of the adapter during which time AMT (manageability firmware) can put the adapter into an unknown state resulting in such things as link test failure, hardware hang, reporting an incorrect link speed, etc. Resetting the adapter during an open() resolves this by putting the adapter into a quiescent state. 2010-05-05e1000/e1000e: implement a simple interrupt moderationJesse Brandeburg
Back before e1000-7.3.20, the e1000 driver had a simple algorithm that managed interrupt moderation. The driver was updated in 7.3.20 to have the new "adaptive" interrupt moderation but we have customer requests to redeploy the old way as an option. This patch adds the old functionality back. The new functionality can be enabled via module parameter or at runtime via ethtool. Module parameter: (InterruptThrottleRate=4) to use this new moderation method. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2009-11-21e1000e: link reporting problemsBruce Allan
Copper links with WoL or management enabled (any condition which prevents the phy from being powered down when the interface is taken down) were always reporting link-up when the interface had been taken down. This is because when the interface is taken down (ifconfig ethx down), interrupts are disabled. With no interrupts, there is no LSC interrupt, which is normally required to set "get_link_status", which instructs the driver to query the device for link state. The fix is to force get_link_status to true if the interface is not up.
