2008-11-07net: Guaranetee the proper ordering of the loopback device. v2Eric W. Biederman
I was recently hunting a bug that occurred in network namespace cleanup. In looking at the code it became apparrent that we have and will continue to have cases where if we have anything going on in a network namespace there will be assumptions that the loopback device is present. Things like sending igmp unsubscribe messages when we bring down network devices invokes the routing code which assumes that at least the loopback driver is present. Therefore to avoid magic initcall ordering hackery that is hard to follow and hard to get right insert a call to register the loopback device directly from net_dev_init(). This guarantes that the loopback device is the first device registered and the last network device to go away. But do it carefully so we register the loopback device after we clear dev_boot_phase. 2008-11-06atmel_serial: keep clock off when it's not neededDavid Brownell
The atmel_serial driver is mismanaging its clock by leaving it on at all times ... the whole point of clock management is to leave it off unless it's actively needed, which conserves power!! Although the kernel doesn't actually hang without my fix, it does discard quite a lot of early console output. The result still looks correct: usart users= 1 on 35000000 Hz, for atmel_usart.0 usart users= 0 off 35000000 Hz, for atmel_usart.2 when using ttyS0 as serial console. 2008-11-06fbdev: fix fb_compat_ioctl() deadlocksGeert Uytterhoeven
commit 3e680aae4e53ab54cdbb0c29257dae0cbb158e1c ("fb: convert lock/unlock_kernel() into local fb mutex") introduced several deadlocks in the fb_compat_ioctl() path, as mutex_lock() doesn't allow recursion, unlike lock_kernel(). This broke frame buffer applications on 64-bit systems with a 32-bit userland. commit 120a37470c2831fea49fdebaceb5a7039f700ce6 ("framebuffer compat_ioctl deadlock") fixed one of the deadlocks. This patch fixes the remaining deadlocks: - Revert commit 120a37470c2831fea49fdebaceb5a7039f700ce6, - Extract the core logic of fb_ioctl() into a new function do_fb_ioctl(), - Change all callsites of fb_ioctl() where info->lock is already held to call do_fb_ioctl() instead, - Add sparse annotations to all routines that take info->lock. 2008-11-06cciss: fix sysfs broken symlink regressionMike Miller
Regression introduced by commit 6ae5ce8e8d4de666f31286808d2285aa6a50fa40 ("cciss: remove redundant code"). This patch fixes a broken symlink in sysfs that was introduced by the above commit. We broke it in 2.6.27-rc on or about 20080804. Some installers are broken if this symlink does not exist and they may not detect the logical drives configured on the controller. It does not require being backported into 2.6.26.x or earlier kernels. Problem 1 (see patch below): vc_tab_stop is declared as an array of 8 unsigned ints in struct vc_data in include/linux/console_struct.h . In drivers/char/vt.c only 5 of these 8 unsigned ints get initialized leading to unintended tabulator placement on displays with more than 160 columns text. In iwl_bg_request_scan function, if we could not send a scan command it will go to done. In done it does the right thing to call mac80211 with scan complete, but the problem is STATUS_SCAN_HW is still set causing any future scan to fail. 2008-11-06md: linear: Fix a division by zero bug for very small arrays.Andre Noll
We currently oops with a divide error on starting a linear software raid array consisting of at least two very small (< 500K) devices. The bug is caused by the calculation of the hash table size which tries to compute sector_div(sz, base) with "base" being zero due to the small size of the component devices of the array. Fix this by requiring the hash spacing to be at least one which implies that also "base" is non-zero. This bug has existed since about 2.6.14. It turns out that it is only safe to call blkdev_ioctl when the device is actually open (as ->bd_disk is set to NULL on last close). And it is quite possible for do_md_stop to be called when the device is not open. Attached is a driver for SMSC's LAN911x and LAN921x families of embedded ethernet controllers. There is an existing smc911x driver in the tree; this is intended to replace it. Dustin McIntire (the author of the smc911x driver) has expressed his support for switching to this driver. This driver contains workarounds for all known hardware issues, and has been tested on all flavours of the chip on multiple architectures. 2008-11-06bonding: alternate agg selection policies for 802.3adJay Vosburgh
This patch implements alternative aggregator selection policies for 802.3ad. The existing policy, now termed "stable," selects the active aggregator by greatest bandwidth, and only reselects a new aggregator if the active aggregator is entirely disabled (no more ports or all ports down). This patch adds two new policies: bandwidth and count, selecting the active aggregator by total bandwidth (like the stable policy) or by the number of ports in the aggregator, respectively. These two policies also differ from the stable policy in that they will reselect the active aggregator when availability-related changes occur in the bond (e.g., link state change). This permits "gang failover" within 802.3ad, allowing redundant aggregators along parallel paths to always maintain the "best" aggregator as the active aggregator (rather than having to wait for the active to entirely fail). 2008-11-06bonding: Fix ALB mode to balance traffic on VLANsJay Vosburgh
The current ALB function that processes incoming ARPs does not handle traffic for VLANs configured above bonding. This causes traffic on those VLANs to all be assigned the same slave. This patch corrects that misbehavior by locating the bonding interface nested below the VLAN interface. 2008-11-06bonding: send IPv6 neighbor advertisement on failoverBrian Haley
This patch adds better IPv6 failover support for bonding devices, especially when in active-backup mode and there are only IPv6 addresses configured, as reported by Alex Sidorenko. - Creates a new file, net/drivers/bonding/bond_ipv6.c, for the IPv6-specific routines. Both regular bonds and VLANs over bonds are supported. - Adds a new tunable, num_unsol_na, to limit the number of unsolicited IPv6 Neighbor Advertisements that are sent on a failover event. Default is 1. - Creates two new IPv6 neighbor discovery functions: ndisc_build_skb() ndisc_send_skb() These were required to support VLANs since we have to be able to add the VLAN id to the skb since ndisc_send_na() and friends shouldn't be asked to do this. These two routines are basically __ndisc_send() split into two pieces, in a slightly different order. - Updates Documentation/networking/bonding.txt and bumps the rev of bond support to 3.4.0. On failover, this new code will generate one packet: - An unsolicited IPv6 Neighbor Advertisement, which helps the switch learn that the address has moved to the new slave. Testing has shown that sending just the NA results in pretty good behavior when in active-back mode, I saw no lost ping packets for example. I was recently hunting a bug that occurred in network namespace cleanup. In looking at the code it became apparrent that we have and will continue to have cases where if we have anything going on in a network namespace there will be assumptions that the loopback device is present. Things like sending igmp unsubscribe messages when we bring down network devices invokes the routing code which assumes that at least the loopback driver is present. Therefore to avoid magic initcall ordering hackery that is hard to follow and hard to get right insert a call to register the loopback device directly from net_dev_init().
