2009-04-02nommu: fix a number of issues with the per-MM VMA patchDavid Howells
Fix a number of issues with the per-MM VMA patch: (1) Make mmap_pages_allocated an atomic_long_t, just in case this is used on a NOMMU system with more than 2G pages. Makes no difference on a 32-bit system. (2) Report vma->vm_pgoff * PAGE_SIZE as a 64-bit value, not a 32-bit value, lest it overflow. (3) Move the allocation of the vm_area_struct slab back for fork.c. (4) Use KMEM_CACHE() for both vm_area_struct and vm_region slabs. (5) Use BUG_ON() rather than if () BUG(). (6) Make the default validate_nommu_regions() a static inline rather than a #define. (7) Make free_page_series()'s objection to pages with a refcount != 1 more informative. (8) Adjust the __put_nommu_region() banner comment to indicate that the semaphore must be held for writing. (9) Limit the number of warnings about munmaps of non-mmapped regions. 2009-03-31Get rid of indirect include of fs_struct.hAl Viro
Don't pull it in sched.h; very few files actually need it and those can include directly. sched.h itself only needs forward declaration of struct fs_struct; Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2009-03-31New locking/refcounting for fs_structAl Viro
* all changes of current->fs are done under task_lock and write_lock of old fs->lock * refcount is not atomic anymore (same protection) * its decrements are done when removing reference from current; at the same time we decide whether to free it. * put_fs_struct() is gone * new field - ->in_exec. Set by check_unsafe_exec() if we are trying to do execve() and only subthreads share fs_struct. Cleared when finishing exec (success and failure alike). Makes CLONE_FS fail with -EAGAIN if set. * check_unsafe_exec() may fail with -EAGAIN if another execve() from subthread is in progress. Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

2009-01-08NOMMU: Make VMAs per MM as for MMU-mode linuxDavid Howells
Make VMAs per mm_struct as for MMU-mode linux. This solves two problems: (1) In SYSV SHM where nattch for a segment does not reflect the number of shmat's (and forks) done. (2) In mmap() where the VMA's vm_mm is set to point to the parent mm by an exec'ing process when VM_EXECUTABLE is specified, regardless of the fact that a VMA might be shared and already have its vm_mm assigned to another process or a dead process. A new struct (vm_region) is introduced to track a mapped region and to remember the circumstances under which it may be shared and the vm_list_struct structure is discarded as it's no longer required. This patch makes the following additional changes: (1) Regions are now allocated with alloc_pages() rather than kmalloc() and with no recourse to __GFP_COMP, so the pages are not composite. Instead, each page has a reference on it held by the region. Anything else that is interested in such a page will have to get a reference on it to retain it. When the pages are released due to unmapping, each page is passed to put_page() and will be freed when the page usage count reaches zero. (2) Excess pages are trimmed after an allocation as the allocation must be made as a power-of-2 quantity of pages. (3) VMAs are added to the parent MM's R/B tree and mmap lists. As an MM may end up with overlapping VMAs within the tree, the VMA struct address is appended to the sort key. (4) Non-anonymous VMAs are now added to the backing inode's prio list. (5) Holes may be punched in anonymous VMAs with munmap(), releasing parts of the backing region. The VMA and region structs will be split if necessary. (6) sys_shmdt() only releases one attachment to a SYSV IPC shared memory segment instead of all the attachments at that addresss. Multiple shmat()'s return the same address under NOMMU-mode instead of different virtual addresses as under MMU-mode. (7) Core dumping for ELF-FDPIC requires fewer exceptions for NOMMU-mode. (8) /proc/maps is now the global list of mapped regions, and may list bits that aren't actually mapped anywhere. (9) /proc/meminfo gains a line (tagged "MmapCopy") that indicates the amount of RAM currently allocated by mmap to hold mappable regions that can't be mapped directly. These are copies of the backing device or file if not anonymous. These changes make NOMMU mode more similar to MMU mode. The downside is that NOMMU mode requires some extra memory to track things over NOMMU without this patch (VMAs are no longer shared, and there are now region structs). 2008-10-10proc: remove kernel.maps_protectAlexey Dobriyan
After commit 831830b5a2b5d413407adf380ef62fe17d6fcbf2 aka "restrict reading from /proc/<pid>/maps to those who share ->mm or can ptrace" sysctl stopped being relevant because commit moved security checks from ->show time to ->start time (mm_for_maps()). 2008-07-14Security: split proc ptrace checking into read vs. attachStephen Smalley
Enable security modules to distinguish reading of process state via proc from full ptrace access by renaming ptrace_may_attach to ptrace_may_access and adding a mode argument indicating whether only read access or full attach access is requested. This allows security modules to permit access to reading process state without granting full ptrace access. The base DAC/capability checking remains unchanged. Read access to /proc/pid/mem continues to apply a full ptrace attach check since check_mem_permission() already requires the current task to already be ptracing the target. The other ptrace checks within proc for elements like environ, maps, and fds are changed to pass the read mode instead of attach. In the SELinux case, we model such reading of process state as a reading of a proc file labeled with the target process' label. This enables SELinux policy to permit such reading of process state without permitting control or manipulation of the target process, as there are a number of cases where programs probe for such information via proc but do not need to be able to control the target (e.g. procps, lsof, PolicyKit, ConsoleKit). At present we have to choose between allowing full ptrace in policy (more permissive than required/desired) or breaking functionality (or in some cases just silencing the denials via dontaudit rules but this can hide genuine attacks). This version of the patch incorporates comments from Casey Schaufler (change/replace existing ptrace_may_attach interface, pass access mode), and Chris Wright (provide greater consistency in the checking). Note that like their predecessors __ptrace_may_attach and ptrace_may_attach, the __ptrace_may_access and ptrace_may_access interfaces use different return value conventions from each other (0 or -errno vs. 1 or 0). I retained this difference to avoid any changes to the caller logic but made the difference clearer by changing the latter interface to return a bool rather than an int and by adding a comment about it to ptrace.h for any future callers. The kernel implements readlink of /proc/pid/exe by getting the file from the first executable VMA. Then the path to the file is reconstructed and reported as the result. Because of the VMA walk the code is slightly different on nommu systems. This patch avoids separate /proc/pid/exe code on nommu systems. Instead of walking the VMAs to find the first executable file-backed VMA we store a reference to the exec'd file in the mm_struct. That reference would prevent the filesystem holding the executable file from being unmounted even after unmapping the VMAs. So we track the number of VM_EXECUTABLE VMAs and drop the new reference when the last one is unmapped. This avoids pinning the mounted filesystem. 2008-01-02restrict reading from /proc/<pid>/maps to those who share ->mm or can ptrace pidAl Viro
Contents of /proc/*/maps is sensitive and may become sensitive after open() (e.g. if target originally shares our ->mm and later does exec on suid-root binary). Check at read() (actually, ->start() of iterator) time that mm_struct we'd grabbed and locked is - still the ->mm of target - equal to reader's ->mm or the target is ptracable by reader. 2007-05-08proc: maps protectionKees Cook
The /proc/pid/ "maps", "smaps", and "numa_maps" files contain sensitive information about the memory location and usage of processes. Issues: - maps should not be world-readable, especially if programs expect any kind of ASLR protection from local attackers. - maps cannot just be 0400 because "-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -O2" makes glibc check the maps when %n is in a *printf call, and a setuid(getuid()) process wouldn't be able to read its own maps file. (For reference see http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/1/22/150) - a system-wide toggle is needed to allow prior behavior in the case of non-root applications that depend on access to the maps contents. This change implements a check using "ptrace_may_attach" before allowing access to read the maps contents. To control this protection, the new knob /proc/sys/kernel/maps_protect has been added, with corresponding updates to the procfs documentation. 2007-02-12[PATCH] mark struct file_operations const 6Arjan van de Ven

2005-04-16Linux-2.6.12-rc2v2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
