2005-09-07[PATCH] Kprobes: prevent possible race conditions genericPrasanna S Panchamukhi
There are possible race conditions if probes are placed on routines within the kprobes files and routines used by the kprobes. For example if you put probe on get_kprobe() routines, the system can hang while inserting probes on any routine such as do_fork(). Because while inserting probes on do_fork(), register_kprobes() routine grabs the kprobes spin lock and executes get_kprobe() routine and to handle probe of get_kprobe(), kprobes_handler() gets executed and tries to grab kprobes spin lock, and spins forever. This patch avoids such possible race conditions by preventing probes on routines within the kprobes file and routines used by kprobes. I have modified the patches as per Andi Kleen's suggestion to move kprobes routines and other routines used by kprobes to a seperate section .kprobes.text. Also moved page fault and exception handlers, general protection fault to .kprobes.text section. These patches have been tested on i386, x86_64 and ppc64 architectures, also compiled on ia64 and sparc64 architectures. 2005-09-05[PATCH] x86: ptep_clear optimizationZachary Amsden
Add a new accessor for PTEs, which passes the full hint from the mmu_gather struct; this allows architectures with hardware pagetables to optimize away atomic PTE operations when destroying an address space. Removing the locked operation should allow better pipelining of memory access in this loop. I measured an average savings of 30-35 cycles per zap_pte_range on the first 500 destructions on Pentium-M, but I believe the optimization would win more on older processors which still assert the bus lock on xchg for an exclusive cacheline. Update: I made some new measurements, and this saves exactly 26 cycles over ptep_get_and_clear on Pentium M. On P4, with a PAE kernel, this saves 180 cycles per ptep_get_and_clear, for a whopping 92160 cycles savings for a full address space destruction. pte_clear_full is not yet used, but is provided for future optimizations (in particular, when running inside of a hypervisor that queues page table updates, the full hint allows us to avoid queueing unnecessary page table update for an address space in the process of being destroyed. This is not a huge win, but it does help a bit, and sets the stage for further hypervisor optimization of the mm layer on all architectures. 2005-09-05[PATCH] mm: consolidate get_orderStephen Rothwell
Someone mentioned that almost all the architectures used basically the same implementation of get_order. This patch consolidates them into asm-generic/page.h and includes that in the appropriate places. The exceptions are ia64 and ppc which have their own (presumably optimised) versions. 2005-08-04[PATCH] pci and yenta: pcibios_bus_to_resourceDominik Brodowski
In yenta_socket, we default to using the resource setting of the CardBus bridge. However, this is a PCI-bus-centric view of resources and thus needs to be converted to generic resources first. Therefore, add a call to pcibios_bus_to_resource() call in between. This function is a mere wrapper on x86 and friends, however on some others it already exists, is added in this patch (alpha, arm, ppc, ppc64) or still needs to be provided (parisc -- where is its pcibios_resource_to_bus() ?). 2005-07-26[PATCH] Add emergency_restart()Eric W. Biederman
When the kernel is working well and we want to restart cleanly kernel_restart is the function to use. But in many instances the kernel wants to reboot when thing are expected to be working very badly such as from panic or a software watchdog handler. This patch adds the function emergency_restart() so that callers can be clear what semantics they expect when calling restart. emergency_restart() is expected to be callable from interrupt context and possibly reliable in even more trying circumstances. This is an initial generic implementation for all architectures. Signed-off-by: Eric W. Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-07-14kbuild: Avoid inconsistent kallsyms dataSam Ravnborg
Several reports on inconsistent kallsyms data has been caused by the aliased symbols __sched_text_start and __down to shift places in the output of nm. The root cause was that on second pass ld aligned __sched_text_start to a 4 byte boundary which is the function alignment on i386. sched.text and spinlock.text is now aligned to an 8 byte boundary to make sure they are aligned to a function alignemnt on most (all?) archs. 2005-06-25[PATCH] kexec: vmlinux: fix physical addressesEric W. Biederman
In vmlinux.lds.h the code is carefull to define every section so vmlinux properly reports the correct physical load address of code, as well as it's virtual address. The new SECURITY_INIT definition fails to follow that convention and and causes incorrect physical address to appear in the vmlinux if there are any security initcalls. This patch updates the SECURITY_INIT to follow the convention in the rest of the file. 2005-06-23[PATCH] adjust per_cpu definition in non-SMP caseJan Beulich

2005-06-23[PATCH] x86/x86_64: pcibus_to_nodeChristoph Lameter
Define pcibus_to_node to be able to figure out which NUMA node contains a given PCI device. This defines pcibus_to_node(bus) in include/linux/topology.h and adjusts the macros for i386 and x86_64 that already provided a way to determine the cpumask of a pci device. x86_64 was changed to not build an array of cpumasks anymore. Instead an array of nodes is build which can be used to generate the cpumask via node_to_cpumask. 2005-06-21[PATCH] msync: check pte dirty earlierAbhijit Karmarkar
It's common practice to msync a large address range regularly, in which often only a few ptes have actually been dirtied since the previous pass. sync_pte_range then goes much faster if it tests whether pte is dirty before locating and accessing each struct page cacheline; and it is hardly slowed by ptep_clear_flush_dirty repeating that test in the opposite case, when every pte actually is dirty. But beware, s390's pte_dirty always says false, since its dirty bit is kept in the storage key, located via the struct page address. So skip this optimization in its case: use a pte_maybe_dirty macro which just says true if page_test_and_clear_dirty is implemented. 2005-05-05[PATCH] ppc32: platform-specific functions missing from kallsyms.David Woodhouse
The PPC32 kernel puts platform-specific functions into separate sections so that unneeded parts of it can be freed when we've booted and actually worked out what we're running on today. This makes kallsyms ignore those functions, because they're not between _[se]text or _[se]inittext. Rather than teaching kallsyms about the various pmac/chrp/etc sections, this patch adds '_[se]extratext' markers for kallsyms. 2005-05-04[PATCH] asm/signal.h unificationAl Viro
New file - asm-generic/signal.h. Contains declarations of __sighandler_t, __sigrestore_t, SIG_DFL, SIG_IGN, SIG_ERR and default definitions of SIG_BLOCK, SIG_UNBLOCK and SIG_SETMASK. asm-*/signal.h switched to including it. The only exception is asm-parisc/signal.h that wants its own declaration of __sighandler_t; that one is left as-is. asm-ppc64/signal.h required one more thing - unlike everybody else it used __sigrestorer_t instead of usual __sigrestore_t. PPC64 switched to common spelling. Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@parcelfarce.linux.theplanet.co.uk> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

2005-05-01[PATCH] add EOWNERDEAD and ENOTRECOVERABLE version 2Joe Korty
Add EOWNERDEAD and ENOTRECOVERABLE to all architectures. This is to support the upcoming patches for robust mutexes. 2005-05-01[PATCH] nice and rt-prio rlimitsMatt Mackall
Add a pair of rlimits for allowing non-root tasks to raise nice and rt priorities. Defaults to traditional behavior. Originally written by Chris Wright. The patch implements a simple rlimit ceiling for the RT (and nice) priorities a task can set. The rlimit defaults to 0, meaning no change in behavior by default. A value of 50 means RT priority levels 1-50 are allowed. A value of 100 means all 99 privilege levels from 1 to 99 are allowed. CAP_SYS_NICE is blanket permission. 2005-04-24[PATCH] __get_unaligned() turned into macroAl Viro
Turns __get_unaligned() and __put_unaligned into macros. 2005-04-19[PATCH] freepgt: remove arch pgd_addr_endHugh Dickins
ia64 and sparc64 hurriedly had to introduce their own variants of pgd_addr_end, to leapfrog over the holes in their virtual address spaces which the final clear_page_range suddenly presented when converted from pgd_index to pgd_addr_end. But now that free_pgtables respects the vma list, those holes are never presented, and the arch variants can go. 2005-04-16[PATCH] add Big Endian variants of ioread/iowriteJames Bottomley
In the new io infrastructure, all of our operators are expecting the underlying device to be little endian (because the PCI bus, their main consumer, is LE). However, there are a fair few devices and busses in the world that are actually Big Endian. There's even evidence that some of these BE bus and chip types are attached to LE systems. Thus, there's a need for a BE equivalent of our io{read,write}{16,32} operations. The attached patch adds this as io{read,write}{16,32}be. When it's in, I'll add the first consume (the 53c700 SCSI chip driver). 2005-04-16Linux-2.6.12-rc2v2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
