2007-07-11PCI: Use a weak symbol for the empty version of pcibios_add_platform_entries()Michael Ellerman
I'm not sure if this is going to fly, weak symbols work on the compilers I'm using, but whether they work for all of the affected architectures I can't say. I've cc'ed as many arch maintainers/lists as I could find. But assuming they do, we can use a weak empty definition of pcibios_add_platform_entries() to avoid having an empty definition on every arch. 2007-07-10lots-of-architectures: enable arbitary speed tty supportAlan Cox
Add the termios2 structure ready for enabling on most platforms. One or two like Sparc are plain weird so have been left alone. Most can use the same structure as ktermios for termios2 (ie the newer ioctl uses the structure matching the current kernel structure) Signed-off-by: Alan Cox <alan@redhat.com> Cc: Bryan Wu <bryan.wu@analog.com> Cc: Ian Molton <spyro@f2s.com> Cc: Haavard Skinnemoen <hskinnemoen@atmel.com> Cc: Yoshinori Sato <ysato@users.sourceforge.jp> Cc: Mikael Starvik <starvik@axis.com> Cc: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com> Cc: "Luck, Tony" <tony.luck@intel.com> Cc: Hirokazu Takata <takata@linux-m32r.org> Cc: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> Cc: Roman Zippel <zippel@linux-m68k.org> Cc: Ralf Baechle <ralf@linux-mips.org> Cc: Kyle McMartin <kyle@mcmartin.ca> Cc: Matthew Wilcox <willy@debian.org> Cc: Heiko Carstens <heiko.carstens@de.ibm.com> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Cc: Paul Mundt <lethal@linux-sh.org> Cc: Kazumoto Kojima <kkojima@rr.iij4u.or.jp> Cc: Richard Curnow <rc@rc0.org.uk> Cc: Miles Bader <uclinux-v850@lsi.nec.co.jp> Cc: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2007-05-08Clean up mostly unused IOSPACE macrosDavid Gibson
Most architectures defined three macros, MK_IOSPACE_PFN(), GET_IOSPACE() and GET_PFN() in pgtable.h. However, the only callers of any of these macros are in Sparc specific code, either in arch/sparc, arch/sparc64 or drivers/sbus. This patch removes the redundant macros from all architectures except sparc and sparc64. 2007-05-08move die notifier handling to common codeChristoph Hellwig
This patch moves the die notifier handling to common code. Previous various architectures had exactly the same code for it. Note that the new code is compiled unconditionally, this should be understood as an appel to the other architecture maintainer to implement support for it aswell (aka sprinkling a notify_die or two in the proper place) arm had a notifiy_die that did something totally different, I renamed it to arm_notify_die as part of the patch and made it static to the file it's declared and used at. avr32 used to pass slightly less information through this interface and I brought it into line with the other architectures. 2007-05-02[PATCH] x86: PARAVIRT: add hooks to intercept mm creation and destructionJeremy Fitzhardinge
Add hooks to allow a paravirt implementation to track the lifetime of an mm. Paravirtualization requires three hooks, but only two are needed in common code. They are: arch_dup_mmap, which is called when a new mmap is created at fork arch_exit_mmap, which is called when the last process reference to an mm is dropped, which typically happens on exit and exec. The third hook is activate_mm, which is called from the arch-specific activate_mm() macro/function, and so doesn't need stub versions for other architectures. It's called when an mm is first used. 2007-04-25[NET]: Adding SO_TIMESTAMPNS / SCM_TIMESTAMPNS supportEric Dumazet
Now that network timestamps use ktime_t infrastructure, we can add a new SOL_SOCKET sockopt SO_TIMESTAMPNS. This command is similar to SO_TIMESTAMP, but permits transmission of a 'timespec struct' instead of a 'timeval struct' control message. (nanosecond resolution instead of microsecond) Control message is labelled SCM_TIMESTAMPNS instead of SCM_TIMESTAMP A socket cannot mix SO_TIMESTAMP and SO_TIMESTAMPNS : the two modes are mutually exclusive. sock_recv_timestamp() became too big to be fully inlined so I added a __sock_recv_timestamp() helper function. 2007-04-25[NET]: Introduce SIOCGSTAMPNS ioctl to get timestamps with nanosec resolutionEric Dumazet

2007-02-11[PATCH] consolidate line discipline number definitionsTilman Schmidt
The line discipline numbers N_* are currently defined for each architecture individually, but (except for a seeming mistake) identically, in asm/termios.h. There is no obvious reason why these numbers should be architecture specific, nor any apparent relationship with the termios structure. The total number of these, NR_LDISCS, is defined in linux/tty.h anyway. So I propose the following patch which moves the definitions of the individual line disciplines to linux/tty.h too. Three of these numbers (N_MASC, N_PROFIBUS_FDL, and N_SMSBLOCK) are unused in the current kernel, but the patch still keeps the complete set in case there are plans to use them yet. 2006-12-13[PATCH] Optimize D-cache alias handling on forkRalf Baechle
Virtually index, physically tagged cache architectures can get away without cache flushing when forking. This patch adds a new cache flushing function flush_cache_dup_mm(struct mm_struct *) which for the moment I've implemented to do the same thing on all architectures except on MIPS where it's a no-op. 2006-12-08[PATCH] tty: preparatory structures for termios revampAlan Cox
In order to sort out our struct termios and add proper speed control we need to separate the kernel and user termios structures. Glibc is fine but the other libraries rely on the kernel exported struct termios and we need to extend this without breaking the ABI/API To do so we add a struct ktermios which is the kernel view of a termios structure and overlaps the struct termios with extra fields on the end for now. (That limitation will go away in later patches). Some platforms (eg alpha) planned ahead and thus use the same struct for both, others did not. This just adds the structures but does not use them, it seems a sensible splitting point for bisect if there are compile failures (not that I expect them) Signed-off-by: Alan Cox <alan@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2006-12-07[PATCH] include/asm-h8300/: "extern inline" -> "static inline"Adrian Bunk
"extern inline" generates a warning with -Wmissing-prototypes and I'm currently working on getting the kernel cleaned up for adding this to the CFLAGS since it will help us to avoid a nasty class of runtime errors. 2006-12-04[PATCH] Centralise definitions of sector_t and blkcnt_tMatthew Wilcox
CONFIG_LBD and CONFIG_LSF are spread into asm/types.h for no particularly good reason. Centralising the definition in linux/types.h means that arch maintainers don't need to bother adding it, as well as fixing the problem with x86-64 users being asked to make a decision that has absolutely no effect. The H8/300 porters seem particularly confused since I'm not aware of any microcontrollers that need to support 2TB filesystems. 2006-07-14[PATCH] remove set_wmb - arch removalSteven Rostedt
set_wmb should not be used in the kernel because it just confuses the code more and has no benefit. Since it is not currently used in the kernel this patch removes it so that new code does not include it. All archs define set_wmb(var, value) to do { var = value; wmb(); } while(0) except ia64 and sparc which use a mb() instead. But this is still moot since it is not used anyway. Hasn't been tested on any archs but x86 and x86_64 (and only compiled tested) Signed-off-by: Steven Rostedt <rostedt@goodmis.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

2006-06-29[AF_UNIX]: Datagram getpeersecCatherine Zhang
This patch implements an API whereby an application can determine the label of its peer's Unix datagram sockets via the auxiliary data mechanism of recvmsg. Patch purpose: This patch enables a security-aware application to retrieve the security context of the peer of a Unix datagram socket. The application can then use this security context to determine the security context for processing on behalf of the peer who sent the packet. Patch design and implementation: The design and implementation is very similar to the UDP case for INET sockets. Basically we build upon the existing Unix domain socket API for retrieving user credentials. Linux offers the API for obtaining user credentials via ancillary messages (i.e., out of band/control messages that are bundled together with a normal message). To retrieve the security context, the application first indicates to the kernel such desire by setting the SO_PASSSEC option via getsockopt. Then the application retrieves the security context using the auxiliary data mechanism. An example server application for Unix datagram socket should look like this: toggle = 1; toggle_len = sizeof(toggle); setsockopt(sockfd, SOL_SOCKET, SO_PASSSEC, &toggle, &toggle_len); recvmsg(sockfd, &msg_hdr, 0); if (msg_hdr.msg_controllen > sizeof(struct cmsghdr)) { cmsg_hdr = CMSG_FIRSTHDR(&msg_hdr); if (cmsg_hdr->cmsg_len <= CMSG_LEN(sizeof(scontext)) && cmsg_hdr->cmsg_level == SOL_SOCKET && cmsg_hdr->cmsg_type == SCM_SECURITY) { memcpy(&scontext, CMSG_DATA(cmsg_hdr), sizeof(scontext)); } } sock_setsockopt is enhanced with a new socket option SOCK_PASSSEC to allow a server socket to receive security context of the peer. Testing: We have tested the patch by setting up Unix datagram client and server applications. We verified that the server can retrieve the security context using the auxiliary data mechanism of recvmsg. 2006-03-26[PATCH] bitops: use non atomic operations for minix_*_bit() and ext2_*_bit()Akinobu Mita
Bitmap functions for the minix filesystem and the ext2 filesystem except ext2_set_bit_atomic() and ext2_clear_bit_atomic() do not require the atomic guarantees. But these are defined by using atomic bit operations on several architectures. (cris, frv, h8300, ia64, m32r, m68k, m68knommu, mips, s390, sh, sh64, sparc, sparc64, v850, and xtensa) This patch switches to non atomic bit operation. 2006-03-26[PATCH] 2TB files: add blkcnt_tTakashi Sato
Add blkcnt_t as the type of inode.i_blocks. This enables you to make the size of blkcnt_t either 4 bytes or 8 bytes on 32 bits architecture with CONFIG_LSF. - CONFIG_LSF Add new configuration parameter. - blkcnt_t On h8300, i386, mips, powerpc, s390 and sh that define sector_t, blkcnt_t is defined as u64 if CONFIG_LSF is enabled; otherwise it is defined as unsigned long. On other architectures, it is defined as unsigned long. - inode.i_blocks Change the type from sector_t to blkcnt_t. 2006-03-25[PATCH] POLLRDHUP/EPOLLRDHUP handling for half-closed devices notificationsDavide Libenzi
Implement the half-closed devices notifiation, by adding a new POLLRDHUP (and its alias EPOLLRDHUP) bit to the existing poll/select sets. Since the existing POLLHUP handling, that does not report correctly half-closed devices, was feared to be changed, this implementation leaves the current POLLHUP reporting unchanged and simply add a new bit that is set in the few places where it makes sense. The same thing was discussed and conceptually agreed quite some time ago: http://lkml.org/lkml/2003/7/12/116 Since this new event bit is added to the existing Linux poll infrastruture, even the existing poll/select system calls will be able to use it. As far as the existing POLLHUP handling, the patch leaves it as is. The pollrdhup-2.6.16.rc5-0.10.diff defines the POLLRDHUP for all the existing archs and sets the bit in the six relevant files. The other attached diff is the simple change required to sys/epoll.h to add the EPOLLRDHUP definition. There is "a stupid program" to test POLLRDHUP delivery here: http://www.xmailserver.org/pollrdhup-test.c It tests poll(2), but since the delivery is same epoll(2) will work equally. 2006-02-15[PATCH] add asm-generic/mman.hMichael S. Tsirkin
Make new MADV_REMOVE, MADV_DONTFORK, MADV_DOFORK consistent across all arches. The idea is to make it possible to use them portably even before distros include them in libc headers. 2006-02-14[PATCH] madvise MADV_DONTFORK/MADV_DOFORKMichael S. Tsirkin
Currently, copy-on-write may change the physical address of a page even if the user requested that the page is pinned in memory (either by mlock or by get_user_pages). This happens if the process forks meanwhile, and the parent writes to that page. As a result, the page is orphaned: in case of get_user_pages, the application will never see any data hardware DMA's into this page after the COW. In case of mlock'd memory, the parent is not getting the realtime/security benefits of mlock. In particular, this affects the Infiniband modules which do DMA from and into user pages all the time. This patch adds madvise options to control whether memory range is inherited across fork. Useful e.g. for when hardware is doing DMA from/into these pages. Could also be useful to an application wanting to speed up its forks by cutting large areas out of consideration. Signed-off-by: Michael S.
