2007-10-16kprobes: support kretprobe blacklistMasami Hiramatsu
Introduce architecture dependent kretprobe blacklists to prohibit users from inserting return probes on the function in which kprobes can be inserted but kretprobes can not. This patch also removes "__kprobes" mark from "__switch_to" on x86_64 and registers "__switch_to" to the blacklist on x86-64, because that mark is to prohibit user from inserting only kretprobe. 2007-10-16x86: optimize page faults like all other achitectures and kill notifier cruftChristoph Hellwig
x86(-64) are the last architectures still using the page fault notifier cruft for the kprobes page fault hook. This patch converts them to the proper direct calls, and removes the now unused pagefault notifier bits aswell as the cruft in kprobes.c that was related to this mess. I know Andi didn't really like this, but all other architecture maintainers agreed the direct calls are much better and besides the obvious cruft removal a common way of dealing with kprobes across architectures is important aswell. 2007-08-22[S390] vmur: fix diag14 exceptions with addresses > 2GB.Michael Holzheu
There are several s390 diagnose calls, which must be executed below the 2GB memory boundary. In order to enforce this, those diagnoses must be compiled into the kernel. Currently diag 14 can be called within the vmur kernel module from addresses above 2GB. This leads to specification exceptions. This patch moves diag10, diag14 and diag210 into the new diag.c file. 2007-07-19define new percpu interface for shared dataFenghua Yu
per cpu data section contains two types of data. One set which is exclusively accessed by the local cpu and the other set which is per cpu, but also shared by remote cpus. In the current kernel, these two sets are not clearely separated out. This can potentially cause the same data cacheline shared between the two sets of data, which will result in unnecessary bouncing of the cacheline between cpus. One way to fix the problem is to cacheline align the remotely accessed per cpu data, both at the beginning and at the end. Because of the padding at both ends, this will likely cause some memory wastage and also the interface to achieve this is not clean. This patch: Moves the remotely accessed per cpu data (which is currently marked as ____cacheline_aligned_in_smp) into a different section, where all the data elements are cacheline aligned. And as such, this differentiates the local only data and remotely accessed data cleanly. 2007-07-17Add __GFP_MOVABLE for callers to flag allocations from high memory that may ↵Mel Gorman
be migrated It is often known at allocation time whether a page may be migrated or not. This patch adds a flag called __GFP_MOVABLE and a new mask called GFP_HIGH_MOVABLE. Allocations using the __GFP_MOVABLE can be either migrated using the page migration mechanism or reclaimed by syncing with backing storage and discarding. An API function very similar to alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() is added for __GFP_MOVABLE allocations called alloc_zeroed_user_highpage_movable(). The flags used by alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() are not changed because it would change the semantics of an existing API. After this patch is applied there are no in-kernel users of alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() so it probably should be marked deprecated if this patch is merged. Note that this patch includes a minor cleanup to the use of __GFP_ZERO in shmem.c to keep all flag modifications to inode->mapping in the shmem_dir_alloc() helper function. This clean-up suggestion is courtesy of Hugh Dickens. Additional credit goes to Christoph Lameter and Linus Torvalds for shaping the concept. 2007-07-16Introduce compat_u64 and compat_s64 typesArnd Bergmann
One common problem with 32 bit system call and ioctl emulation is the different alignment rules between i386 and 64 bit machines. A number of drivers work around this by marking the compat structures as 'attribute((packed))', which is not the right solution because it breaks all the non-x86 architectures that want to use the same compat code. Hopefully, this patch improves the situation, it introduces two new types, compat_u64 and compat_s64. These are defined on all architectures to have the same size and alignment as the 32 bit version of u64 and s64. Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Acked-by: David S. Continuing the work started in 411f0f3edc141a582190d3605cadd1d993abb6df ... This enables code with a dma path, that compiles away, to build without requiring additional code factoring. It also prevents code that calls dma_alloc_coherent and dma_free_coherent from linking whereas previously the code would hit a BUG() at run time. 2007-05-09Remove hardcoding of hard_smp_processor_id on UP systemsFernando Luis Vazquez Cao
With the advent of kdump, the assumption that the boot CPU when booting an UP kernel is always the CPU with a particular hardware ID (often 0) (usually referred to as BSP on some architectures) is not valid anymore. The reason being that the dump capture kernel boots on the crashed CPU (the CPU that invoked crash_kexec), which may be or may not be that particular CPU. Move definition of hard_smp_processor_id for the UP case to architecture-specific code ("asm/smp.h") where it belongs, so that each architecture can provide its own implementation. 2007-05-08kdump/kexec: calculate note size at compile timeSimon Horman
Currently the size of the per-cpu region reserved to save crash notes is set by the per-architecture value MAX_NOTE_BYTES. Which in turn is currently set to 1024 on all supported architectures. While testing ia64 I recently discovered that this value is in fact too small. The particular setup I was using actually needs 1172 bytes. This lead to very tedious failure mode where the tail of one elf note would overwrite the head of another if they ended up being alocated sequentially by kmalloc, which was often the case. It seems to me that a far better approach is to caclculate the size that the area needs to be. This patch does just that. If a simpler stop-gap patch for ia64 to be squeezed into 2.6.21(.X) is needed then this should be as easy as making MAX_NOTE_BYTES larger in arch/asm-ia64/kexec.h. Perhaps 2048 would be a good choice. However, I think that the approach in this patch is a much more robust idea. 2007-05-08move die notifier handling to common codeChristoph Hellwig
This patch moves the die notifier handling to common code. Previous various architectures had exactly the same code for it. Note that the new code is compiled unconditionally, this should be understood as an appel to the other architecture maintainer to implement support for it aswell (aka sprinkling a notify_die or two in the proper place) arm had a notifiy_die that did something totally different, I renamed it to arm_notify_die as part of the patch and made it static to the file it's declared and used at. avr32 used to pass slightly less information through this interface and I brought it into line with the other architectures.
