2006-04-29Remove unneeded _syscallX macros from user view in asm-*/unistd.hDavid Woodhouse
These aren't needed by glibc or klibc, and they're broken in some cases anyway. The uClibc folks are apparently switching over to stop using them too (now that we agreed that they should be dropped, at least). Signed-off-by: David Woodhouse <dwmw2@infradead.org>

2006-03-27[PATCH] unify PFN_* macrosDave Hansen
Just about every architecture defines some macros to do operations on pfns. They're all virtually identical. This patch consolidates all of them. One minor glitch is that at least i386 uses them in a very skeletal header file. To keep away from #include dependency hell, I stuck the new definitions in a new, isolated header. Of all of the implementations, sh64 is the only one that varied by a bit. It used some masks to ensure that any sign-extension got ripped away before the arithmetic is done. This has been posted to that sh64 maintainers and the development list. Compiles on x86, x86_64, ia64 and ppc64. 2006-03-26[PATCH] bitops: use non atomic operations for minix_*_bit() and ext2_*_bit()Akinobu Mita
Bitmap functions for the minix filesystem and the ext2 filesystem except ext2_set_bit_atomic() and ext2_clear_bit_atomic() do not require the atomic guarantees. But these are defined by using atomic bit operations on several architectures. (cris, frv, h8300, ia64, m32r, m68k, m68knommu, mips, s390, sh, sh64, sparc, sparc64, v850, and xtensa) This patch switches to non atomic bit operation. 2006-03-25[PATCH] POLLRDHUP/EPOLLRDHUP handling for half-closed devices notificationsDavide Libenzi
Implement the half-closed devices notifiation, by adding a new POLLRDHUP (and its alias EPOLLRDHUP) bit to the existing poll/select sets. Since the existing POLLHUP handling, that does not report correctly half-closed devices, was feared to be changed, this implementation leaves the current POLLHUP reporting unchanged and simply add a new bit that is set in the few places where it makes sense. The same thing was discussed and conceptually agreed quite some time ago: http://lkml.org/lkml/2003/7/12/116 Since this new event bit is added to the existing Linux poll infrastruture, even the existing poll/select system calls will be able to use it. As far as the existing POLLHUP handling, the patch leaves it as is. The pollrdhup-2.6.16.rc5-0.10.diff defines the POLLRDHUP for all the existing archs and sets the bit in the six relevant files. The other attached diff is the simple change required to sys/epoll.h to add the EPOLLRDHUP definition. There is "a stupid program" to test POLLRDHUP delivery here: http://www.xmailserver.org/pollrdhup-test.c It tests poll(2), but since the delivery is same epoll(2) will work equally. 2006-01-09[PATCH] mutex subsystem, add default include/asm-*/mutex.h filesArjan van de Ven
add the per-arch mutex.h files for the remaining architectures. We default to asm-generic/mutex-dec.h, because that performs quite well on most arches. 2006-01-06[PATCH] atomic_long_t & include/asm-generic/atomic.h V2Christoph Lameter
Several counters already have the need to use 64 atomic variables on 64 bit platforms (see mm_counter_t in sched.h). We have to do ugly ifdefs to fall back to 32 bit atomic on 32 bit platforms. The VM statistics patch that I am working on will also make more extensive use of atomic64. This patch introduces a new type atomic_long_t by providing definitions in asm-generic/atomic.h that works similar to the c "long" type. Its 32 bits on 32 bit platforms and 64 bits on 64 bit platforms. Also cleans up the determination of the mm_counter_t in sched.h. 2005-09-21[PATCH] Remove unused var from asm/futex.hPaolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso
As recently done by Russell King for ARM, commit 4732efbeb997189d9f9b04708dc26bf8613ed721 introduces a generic asm/futex.h copied along most arches, which includes a "-ENOSYS support" to be changed if needed. However, it includes an unused var (taken from the "real" version) which GCC warns about. Remove it from all arches having that file version (i.e. same GIT id). $ git-diff-tree -r HEAD and $ git-ls-tree -r HEAD include/|grep 9feff4ce1424bc390608326240be369eb13aa648 may be more interesting than looking at the patch itself, to make sure I've just copied the arm header to all other archs having the original dummy version of this file. 2005-09-07[PATCH] auxiliary vector cleanupsH. J. Lu
The size of auxiliary vector is fixed at 42 in linux/sched.h. But it isn't very obvious when looking at linux/elf.h. 2005-09-07[PATCH] FUTEX_WAKE_OP: pthread_cond_signal() speedupJakub Jelinek
ATM pthread_cond_signal is unnecessarily slow, because it wakes one waiter (which at least on UP usually means an immediate context switch to one of the waiter threads). This waiter wakes up and after a few instructions it attempts to acquire the cv internal lock, but that lock is still held by the thread calling pthread_cond_signal. So it goes to sleep and eventually the signalling thread is scheduled in, unlocks the internal lock and wakes the waiter again. Now, before 2003-09-21 NPTL was using FUTEX_REQUEUE in pthread_cond_signal to avoid this performance issue, but it was removed when locks were redesigned to the 3 state scheme (unlocked, locked uncontended, locked contended). Following scenario shows why simply using FUTEX_REQUEUE in pthread_cond_signal together with using lll_mutex_unlock_force in place of lll_mutex_unlock is not enough and probably why it has been disabled at that time: The number is value in cv->__data.__lock. thr1 thr2 thr3 0 pthread_cond_wait 1 lll_mutex_lock (cv->__data.__lock) 0 lll_mutex_unlock (cv->__data.__lock) 0 lll_futex_wait (&cv->__data.__futex, futexval) 0 pthread_cond_signal 1 lll_mutex_lock (cv->__data.__lock) 1 pthread_cond_signal 2 lll_mutex_lock (cv->__data.__lock) 2 lll_futex_wait (&cv->__data.__lock, 2) 2 lll_futex_requeue (&cv->__data.__futex, 0, 1, &cv->__data.__lock) # FUTEX_REQUEUE, not FUTEX_CMP_REQUEUE 2 lll_mutex_unlock_force (cv->__data.__lock) 0 cv->__data.__lock = 0 0 lll_futex_wake (&cv->__data.__lock, 1) 1 lll_mutex_lock (cv->__data.__lock) 0 lll_mutex_unlock (cv->__data.__lock) # Here, lll_mutex_unlock doesn't know there are threads waiting # on the internal cv's lock Now, I believe it is possible to use FUTEX_REQUEUE in pthread_cond_signal, but it will cost us not one, but 2 extra syscalls and, what's worse, one of these extra syscalls will be done for every single waiting loop in pthread_cond_*wait. We would need to use lll_mutex_unlock_force in pthread_cond_signal after requeue and lll_mutex_cond_lock in pthread_cond_*wait after lll_futex_wait. Another alternative is to do the unlocking pthread_cond_signal needs to do (the lock can't be unlocked before lll_futex_wake, as that is racy) in the kernel. I have implemented both variants, futex-requeue-glibc.patch is the first one and futex-wake_op{,-glibc}.patch is the unlocking inside of the kernel. The kernel interface allows userland to specify how exactly an unlocking operation should look like (some atomic arithmetic operation with optional constant argument and comparison of the previous futex value with another constant). It has been implemented just for ppc*, x86_64 and i?86, for other architectures I'm including just a stub header which can be used as a starting point by maintainers to write support for their arches and ATM will just return -ENOSYS for FUTEX_WAKE_OP. The requeue patch has been (lightly) tested just on x86_64, the wake_op patch on ppc64 kernel running 32-bit and 64-bit NPTL and x86_64 kernel running 32-bit and 64-bit NPTL. With the following benchmark on UP x86-64 I get: for i in nptl-orig nptl-requeue nptl-wake_op; do echo time elf/ld.so --library-path .:$i /tmp/bench; \ for j in 1 2; do echo ( time elf/ld.so --library-path .:$i /tmp/bench ) 2>&1; done; done time elf/ld.so --library-path .:nptl-orig /tmp/bench real 0m0.655s user 0m0.253s sys 0m0.403s real 0m0.657s user 0m0.269s sys 0m0.388s time elf/ld.so --library-path .:nptl-requeue /tmp/bench real 0m0.496s user 0m0.225s sys 0m0.271s real 0m0.531s user 0m0.242s sys 0m0.288s time elf/ld.so --library-path .:nptl-wake_op /tmp/bench real 0m0.380s user 0m0.176s sys 0m0.204s real 0m0.382s user 0m0.175s sys 0m0.207s The benchmark is at: http://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2005-03/txt00001.txt Older futex-requeue-glibc.patch version is at: http://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2005-03/txt00002.txt Older futex-wake_op-glibc.patch version is at: http://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2005-03/txt00003.txt Will post a new version (just x86-64 fixes so that the patch applies against pthread_cond_signal.S) to libc-hacker ml soon. 2005-07-26[PATCH] Add emergency_restart()Eric W. Biederman
When the kernel is working well and we want to restart cleanly kernel_restart is the function to use. But in many instances the kernel wants to reboot when thing are expected to be working very badly such as from panic or a software watchdog handler. 2005-06-27[PATCH] PCI: DMA bursting adviceDavid S. Miller
After seeing, at best, "guesses" as to the following kind of information in several drivers, I decided that we really need a way for platforms to specifically give advice in this area for what works best with their PCI controller implementation. Basically, this new interface gives DMA bursting advice on PCI. There are three forms of the advice: 1) Burst as much as possible, it is not necessary to end bursts on some particular boundary for best performance. 2) Burst on some byte count multiple. A DMA burst to some multiple of number of bytes may be done, but it is important to end the burst on an exact multiple for best performance. The best example of this I am aware of are the PPC64 PCI controllers, where if you end a burst mid-cacheline then chip has to refetch the data and the IOMMU translations which hurts performance a lot. 3) Burst on a single byte count multiple. Bursts shall end exactly on the next multiple boundary for best performance. Sparc64 and Alpha's PCI controllers operate this way. They disconnect any device which tries to burst across a cacheline boundary. Actually, newer sparc64 PCI controllers do not have this behavior. That is why the "pdev" is passed into the interface, so I can add code later to check which PCI controller the system is using and give advice accordingly. Signed-off-by: David S. 2005-06-23[PATCH] streamline preempt_count type across archsJesper Juhl
The preempt_count member of struct thread_info is currently either defined as int, unsigned int or __s32 depending on arch. This patch makes the type of preempt_count an int on all archs. Having preempt_count be an unsigned type prevents the catching of preempt_count < 0 bugs, and using int on some archs and __s32 on others is not exactely "neat" - much nicer when it's just int all over. A previous version of this patch was already ACK'ed by Robert Love, and the only change in this version of the patch compared to the one he ACK'ed is that this one also makes sure the preempt_count member is consistently commented. 2005-06-21[PATCH] Hugepage consolidationDavid Gibson
A lot of the code in arch/*/mm/hugetlbpage.c is quite similar. This patch attempts to consolidate a lot of the code across the arch's, putting the combined version in mm/hugetlb.c. There are a couple of uglyish hacks in order to covert all the hugepage archs, but the result is a very large reduction in the total amount of code. It also means things like hugepage lazy allocation could be implemented in one place, instead of six. Tested, at least a little, on ppc64, i386 and x86_64. Notes: - this patch changes the meaning of set_huge_pte() to be more analagous to set_pte() - does SH4 need s special huge_ptep_get_and_clear()?? 2005-05-28[PATCH] sh: PREEMPT_ACTIVE fixPaul Mundt
Port Paulus's ppc64 fix to sh: When the generic IRQ stuff went in, it seems that HARDIRQ_BITS got bumped from 9 (for ppc64) up to 12. Consequently, the PREEMPT_ACTIVE bit is now within HARDIRQ_MASK, and I get in_interrupt() falsely returning true when PREEMPT_ACTIVE is set, and thus a BUG_ON tripping in arch/ppc64/mm/tlb.c. 2005-05-04[PATCH] asm/signal.h unificationAl Viro
New file - asm-generic/signal.h. Contains declarations of __sighandler_t, __sigrestore_t, SIG_DFL, SIG_IGN, SIG_ERR and default definitions of SIG_BLOCK, SIG_UNBLOCK and SIG_SETMASK. asm-*/signal.h switched to including it. The only exception is asm-parisc/signal.h that wants its own declaration of __sighandler_t; that one is left as-is. asm-ppc64/signal.h required one more thing - unlike everybody else it used __sigrestorer_t instead of usual __sigrestore_t. PPC64 switched to common spelling. Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@parcelfarce.linux.theplanet.co.uk> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-05-01[PATCH] misc verify_area cleanupsJesper Juhl
There were still a few comments left refering to verify_area, and two functions, verify_area_skas & verify_area_tt that just wrap corresponding access_ok_skas & access_ok_tt functions, just like verify_area does for access_ok - deprecate those. There was also a few places that still used verify_area in commented-out code, fix those up to use access_ok. After applying this one there should not be anything left but finally removing verify_area completely, which will happen after a kernel release or two. 2005-05-01[PATCH] move SA_xxx defines to linux/signal.hStas Sergeev
The attached patch moves the IRQ-related SA_xxx flags (namely, SA_PROBE, SA_SAMPLE_RANDOM and SA_SHIRQ) from all the arch-specific headers to linux/signal.h. This looks like a left-over after the irq-handling code was consolidated. The code was moved to kernel/irq/*, but the flags are still left per-arch. Right now, adding a new IRQ flag to the arch-specific header, like this patch does: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/alsa/alsa-driver/utils/patches/pcsp-kernel-2.6.10-03.diff?rev=1.1 no longer works, it breaks the compilation for all other arches, unless you add that flag to all the other arch-specific headers too. So I think such a clean-up makes sense. Signed-off-by: Stas Sergeev <stsp@aknet.ru> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
