2013-05-28perf: Add sysfs entry to adjust multiplexing interval per PMUStephane Eranian
This patch adds /sys/device/xxx/perf_event_mux_interval_ms to ajust the multiplexing interval per PMU. The unit is milliseconds. Value has to be >= 1. In the 4th version, we renamed the sysfs file to be more consistent with the other /proc/sys/kernel entries for perf_events. In the 5th version, we handle the reprogramming of the hrtimer using hrtimer_forward_now(). That way, we sync up to new timer value quickly (suggested by Jiri Olsa). 2013-05-28perf: Use hrtimers for event multiplexingStephane Eranian
The current scheme of using the timer tick was fine for per-thread events. However, it was causing bias issues in system-wide mode (including for uncore PMUs). Event groups would not get their fair share of runtime on the PMU. With tickless kernels, if a core is idle there is no timer tick, and thus no event rotation (multiplexing). However, there are events (especially uncore events) which do count even though cores are asleep. This patch changes the timer source for multiplexing. It introduces a per-PMU per-cpu hrtimer. The advantage is that even when a core goes idle, it will come back to service the hrtimer, thus multiplexing on system-wide events works much better. The per-PMU implementation (suggested by PeterZ) enables adjusting the multiplexing interval per PMU. The preferred interval is stashed into the struct pmu. If not set, it will be forced to the default interval value. In order to minimize the impact of the hrtimer, it is turned on and off on demand. When the PMU on a CPU is overcommited, the hrtimer is activated. It is stopped when the PMU is not overcommitted. In order for this to work properly, we had to change the order of initialization in start_kernel() such that hrtimer_init() is run before perf_event_init(). The default interval in milliseconds is set to a timer tick just like with the old code. We will provide a sysctl to tune this in another patch. 2013-05-27MPLS: Add limited GSO supportSimon Horman
In the case where a non-MPLS packet is received and an MPLS stack is added it may well be the case that the original skb is GSO but the NIC used for transmit does not support GSO of MPLS packets. The aim of this code is to provide GSO in software for MPLS packets whose skbs are GSO. SKB Usage: When an implementation adds an MPLS stack to a non-MPLS packet it should do the following to skb metadata: * Set skb->inner_protocol to the old non-MPLS ethertype of the packet. skb->inner_protocol is added by this patch. * Set skb->protocol to the new MPLS ethertype of the packet. * Set skb->network_header to correspond to the end of the L3 header, including the MPLS label stack. I have posted a patch, "[PATCH v3.29] datapath: Add basic MPLS support to kernel" which adds MPLS support to the kernel datapath of Open vSwtich. That patch sets the above requirements in datapath/actions.c:push_mpls() and was used to exercise this code. The datapath patch is against the Open vSwtich tree but it is intended that it be added to the Open vSwtich code present in the mainline Linux kernel at some point. Features: I believe that the approach that I have taken is at least partially consistent with the handling of other protocols. Jesse, I understand that you have some ideas here. I am more than happy to change my implementation. This patch adds dev->mpls_features which may be used by devices to advertise features supported for MPLS packets. A new NETIF_F_MPLS_GSO feature is added for devices which support hardware MPLS GSO offload. Currently no devices support this and MPLS GSO always falls back to software. Alternate Implementation: One possible alternate implementation is to teach netif_skb_features() and skb_network_protocol() about MPLS, in a similar way to their understanding of VLANs. I believe this would avoid the need for net/mpls/mpls_gso.c and in particular the calls to __skb_push() and __skb_push() in mpls_gso_segment(). I have decided on the implementation in this patch as it should not introduce any overhead in the case where mpls_gso is not compiled into the kernel or inserted as a module. 2013-05-27phy: allow drivers to flag a PHY device as internalFlorian Fainelli
libphy currently always reports a PHY as an external transceiver from the ethtool output. This is inaccurate, because some drivers should be able to tell that a PHY device is an internal transceiver of an Ethernet MAC. Add a new flag (PHY_IS_INTERNAL) which can be set by PHY drivers just like other flags, and a corresponding helper: phy_is_internal() which can be used by networking drivers to query if a given PHY device is internal. 2013-05-27ext4: make punch hole code path work with bigallocLukas Czerner
Currently punch hole is disabled in file systems with bigalloc feature enabled. However the recent changes in punch hole patch should make it easier to support punching holes on bigalloc enabled file systems. This commit changes partial_cluster handling in ext4_remove_blocks(), ext4_ext_rm_leaf() and ext4_ext_remove_space(). Currently partial_cluster is unsigned long long type and it makes sure that we will free the partial cluster if all extents has been released from that cluster. However it has been specifically designed only for truncate. With punch hole we can be freeing just some extents in the cluster leaving the rest untouched. So we have to make sure that we will notice cluster which still has some extents. To do this I've changed partial_cluster to be signed long long type. The only scenario where this could be a problem is when cluster_size == block size, however in that case there would not be any partial clusters so we're safe. For bigger clusters the signed type is enough. Now we use the negative value in partial_cluster to mark such cluster used, hence we know that we must not free it even if all other extents has been freed from such cluster. This scenario can be described in simple diagram: |FFF...FF..FF.UUU| ^----------^ punch hole . - free space | - cluster boundary F - freed extent U - used extent Also update respective tracepoints to use signed long long type for partial_cluster. Here we introduce a new interface to replace alloc_pci_dev(): struct pci_dev *pci_alloc_dev(struct pci_bus *bus) It takes a "struct pci_bus *" argument, so we can alloc a PCI device on a target PCI bus, and it acquires a reference on the pci_bus. We use pci_alloc_dev(NULL) to simplify the old alloc_pci_dev(), and keep it for a while but mark it as __deprecated. Holding a reference to the pci_bus ensures that referencing pci_dev->bus is valid as long as the pci_dev is valid. So far only the SDHI implementation uses TMIO MMC with DMA. That way a DMA channel filter function, defined in the TMIO driver wasn't a problem. However, such a filter function is DMA controller specific. Since the SDHI glue is only running on systems with the SHDMA DMA controller, the filter function can safely be provided by it. 2013-05-26mmc: core: Fix select power class after resumeFredrik Soderstedt
Use the saved values in card->ext_csd when selecting power class. By doing this the power class will be selected even if mmc_init_card is called with oldcard != NULL, which is the case after a suspend/resume. Today ext_csd is NULL if mmc_init_card is called with oldcard != NULL and power class will not be selected. According to the eMMC specification the POWER_CLASS value is reset after power failure, H/W reset assertion and any CMD0 reset. 2013-05-26mmc: core: Restructure and simplify code for mmc sleep|awakeUlf Hansson
The mmc_card_sleep|awake APIs are not being used since the support is already properly encapsulated within the suspend sequence. Sleep|awake command is also specific for eMMC. We remove the sleep|awake bus_ops, the mmc_card_sleep|awake APIs and move the code into the mmc specific core instead. This also includes the mmc ops function, mmc_sleepawake. All releated functions have then become static and we have got far less code to maintain. Additionally this patch also simplifies the code from mmc_sleepawake, since it is only used to put the card to sleep and not awake. 2013-05-26mmc: core: Support aggressive power management for (e)MMC/SDUlf Hansson
Aggressive power management is suitable when saving power is essential. At request inactivity timeout, aka pm runtime autosuspend timeout, the card will be suspended. Once a new request arrives, the card will be re-initalized and thus the first request will suffer from a latency. This latency is card-specific, experiments has shown in general that SD-cards has quite poor initialization time, around 300ms-1100ms. eMMC is not surprisingly far better but still a couple of hundreds of ms has been observed. Except for the request latency, it is important to know that suspending the card will also prevent the card from executing internal house-keeping operations in idle mode. This could mean degradation in performance. To use this feature make sure the request inactivity timeout is chosen carefully. This has not been done as a part of this patch. 2013-05-26mmc: block: Enable runtime pm for mmc blkdeviceUlf Hansson
Once the mmc blkdevice is being probed, runtime pm will be enabled. By using runtime autosuspend, the power save operations can be done when request inactivity occurs for a certain time. Right now the selected timeout value is set to 3 s. Obviously this value will likely need to be configurable somehow since it needs to be trimmed depending on the power save algorithm. For SD-combo cards, we are still leaving the enablement of runtime PM to the SDIO init sequence since it depends on the capabilities of the SDIO func driver. Moreover, when the blk device is being suspended, we make sure the device will be runtime resumed. The reason for doing this is that we want the host suspend sequence to be unaware of any runtime power save operations done for the card in this phase. Thus it can just handle the suspend as the card is fully powered from a runtime perspective. Finally, this patch prepares to make it possible to move BKOPS handling into the runtime callbacks for the mmc bus_ops. Thus IDLE BKOPS can be accomplished. 2013-05-26mmc: card: Adding support for sanitize in eMMC 4.5Maya Erez
The sanitize support is added as a user-app ioctl call, and was removed from the block-device request, since its purpose is to be invoked not via File-System but by a user. This feature deletes the unmap memory region of the eMMC card, by writing to a specific register in the EXT_CSD. unmap region is the memory region that was previously deleted (by erase, trim or discard operation). In order to avoid timeout when sanitizing large-scale cards, the timeout for sanitize operation is 240 seconds. Previously the MMC_CAP2_DETECT_ON_ERR was invented for detecting slow card removal. In was never a realy good solution and a proper fix has been merged using gpio debouncing instead. We remove this cap in this patch. Although when using polling card detect mode, the code invented for MMC_CAP2_DETECT_ON_ERR is re-used to complete card removal in an earlier phase. There are no need waiting for the polling timeout to elapse in this case. 2013-05-25net: ipv6: Add IPv6 support to the ping socket.Lorenzo Colitti
This adds the ability to send ICMPv6 echo requests without a raw socket. The equivalent ability for ICMPv4 was added in 2011. Instead of having separate code paths for IPv4 and IPv6, make most of the code in net/ipv4/ping.c dual-stack and only add a few IPv6-specific bits (like the protocol definition) to a new net/ipv6/ping.c. Hopefully this will reduce divergence and/or duplication of bugs in the future. Caveats: - Setting options via ancillary data (e.g., using IPV6_PKTINFO to specify the outgoing interface) is not yet supported. - There are no separate security settings for IPv4 and IPv6; everything is controlled by /proc/net/ipv4/ping_group_range. - The proc interface does not yet display IPv6 ping sockets properly. 2013-05-24wait: fix false timeouts when using wait_event_timeout()Imre Deak
Many callers of the wait_event_timeout() and wait_event_interruptible_timeout() expect that the return value will be positive if the specified condition becomes true before the timeout elapses. However, at the moment this isn't guaranteed. If the wake-up handler is delayed enough, the time remaining until timeout will be calculated as 0 - and passed back as a return value - even if the condition became true before the timeout has passed. Fix this by returning at least 1 if the condition becomes true. This semantic is in line with what wait_for_condition_timeout() does; see commit bb10ed09 ("sched: fix wait_for_completion_timeout() spurious failure under heavy load"). Daniel said "We have 3 instances of this bug in drm/i915. One case even where we switch between the interruptible and not interruptible wait_event_timeout variants, foolishly presuming they have the same semantics. I very much like this." 2013-05-24rapidio: make enumeration/discovery configurableAlexandre Bounine
Systems that use RapidIO fabric may need to implement their own enumeration and discovery methods which are better suitable for needs of a target application. The following set of patches is intended to simplify process of introduction of new RapidIO fabric enumeration/discovery methods. The first patch offers ability to add new RapidIO enumeration/discovery methods using kernel configuration options. This new configuration option mechanism allows to select statically linked or modular enumeration/discovery method(s) from the list of existing methods or use external module(s). This patch also updates the currently existing enumeration/discovery code to be used as a statically linked or modular method. The corresponding configuration option is named "Basic enumeration/discovery" method. This is the only one configuration option available today but new methods are expected to be introduced after adoption of provided patches. The second patch address a long time complaint of RapidIO subsystem users regarding fabric enumeration/discovery start sequence. Existing implementation offers only a boot-time enumeration/discovery start which requires synchronized boot of all endpoints in RapidIO network. While it works for small closed configurations with limited number of endpoints, using this approach in systems with large number of endpoints is quite challenging. To eliminate requirement for synchronized start the second patch introduces RapidIO enumeration/discovery start from user space. For compatibility with the existing RapidIO subsystem implementation, automatic boot time enumeration/discovery start can be configured in by specifying "rio-scan.scan=1" command line parameter if statically linked basic enumeration method is selected. This patch: Rework to implement RapidIO enumeration/discovery method selection combined with ability to use enumeration/discovery as a kernel module. This patch adds ability to introduce new RapidIO enumeration/discovery methods using kernel configuration options. Configuration option mechanism allows to select statically linked or modular enumeration/discovery method from the list of existing methods or use external modules. If a modular enumeration/discovery is selected each RapidIO mport device can have its own method attached to it. The existing enumeration/discovery code was updated to be used as statically linked or modular method. This configuration option is named "Basic enumeration/discovery" method. Several common routines have been moved from rio-scan.c to make them available to other enumeration methods and reduce number of exported symbols. Using separate locks in cfg80211 and mac80211 has always caused issues, for example having to unlock in places in mac80211 to call cfg80211, which even needed a framework to make cfg80211 calls after some functions returned etc. Additionally, I suspect some issues people have reported with the cfg80211 state getting confused could be due to such issues, when cfg80211 is asking mac80211 to change state but mac80211 is in the process of telling cfg80211 that the state changed (in another way.) Virtually all code paths in cfg80211 already (need to) hold the RTNL. As such, there's little point in having another four mutexes for various parts of the code, they just cause lock ordering issues (and much of the time, the RTNL and a few of the others need thus be held.) Simplify all this by getting rid of the extra four mutexes and just use the RTNL throughout. Only a few code changes were needed to do this and we can get rid of a work struct for bonus points.
