There are times that we need to know which controller we are on to decide how to exclude devices properly. We now pass the pci_controller that we are going to use down to the pci_exclude_device function. This will greatly simplify being able to exclude the PHBs in multiple controller setups. 2007-06-28[POWERPC] Move iSeries_tb_recal into its own late_initcall.Tony Breeds
Currently iSeries will recalibrate the cputime_factors in the first settimeofday() call. It seems the reason for doing this is to ensure a resaonable time delta after time_init(). On current kernels (with udev), this call is made 40-60 seconds into the boot process, by moving it to a late initcall it is called approximately 5 seconds after time_init() is called. 2007-06-25[POWERPC] Fix Kexec/Kdump for power6Sachin P. Sant
On Power machines supporting VRMA, Kexec/Kdump does not work. VRMA (virtual real-mode area) means that accesses with IR/DR = 0 (i.e. the MMU "off") actually still go through the hash table, using entries put there by the hypervisor. This means that when we clear out the hash table on kexec, we need to make sure these entries are left untouched. This also adds plpar_pte_read_raw() on the lines of plpar_pte_remove_raw(). 2007-06-14[POWERPC] Merge CPU features pertaining to icache coherencyDavid Gibson
Currently the powerpc kernel has a 64-bit only feature, COHERENT_ICACHE used for those CPUS which maintain icache/dcache coherency in hardware (POWER5, essentially). It also has a feature, SPLIT_ID_CACHE, which is used on CPUs which have separate i and d-caches, which is to say everything except 601 and Freescale E200. In nearly all the places we check the SPLIT_ID_CACHE, what we actually care about is whether the i and d-caches are coherent (which they will be, trivially, if they're the same cache). This tries to clarify the situation a little. The COHERENT_ICACHE feature becomes availble on 32-bit and is set for all CPUs where i and d-cache are effectively coherent, whether this is due to special logic (POWER5) or because they're unified. We check this, instead of SPLIT_ID_CACHE nearly everywhere. The SPLIT_ID_CACHE feature itself is replaced by a UNIFIED_ID_CACHE feature with reversed sense, set only on 601 and Freescale E200. In the two places (one Freescale BookE specific) where we really care whether it's a unified cache, not whether they're coherent, we check this feature. The CPUs with unified cache are so few, we could consider replacing this feature bit with explicit checks against the PVR. Using typedefs to rename structure types if frowned on by CodingStyle. However, we do so for the hash PTE structure on both ppc32 (where it's called "PTE") and ppc64 (where it's called "hpte_t"). On ppc32 we also have such a typedef for the BATs ("BAT"). This removes this unhelpful use of typedefs, in the process bringing ppc32 and ppc64 closer together, by using the name "struct hash_pte" in both cases. 2007-06-14[POWERPC] Donate idle CPU cycles on dedicated partitionsJake Moilanen
A Power6 can give up CPU cycles on a dedicated CPU (as opposed to a shared CPU) to other shared processors if the administrator asks for it (via the HMC). This enables that to work properly on P6. This just involves setting a bit in the CAS structure as well as the VPA. To donate cycles, a CPU has to have all SMT threads idle and have the donate bit set in the VPA. Then call H_CEDE. The reason why shared processors just aren't used is because dedicated CPUs are guaranteed an actual processor, yet the system is still able to increase the capacity of the shared CPU pool. The powerpc ptrace interface is dodgy at best. We have defined our "own" versions of GETREGS/SETREGS/GETFPREGS/SETFPREGS that strangely take arguments in reverse order from other archs (in addition to having different request numbers) and have subtle issue, like not accessing all of the registers in their respective categories. This patch moves the implementation of those to a separate function in order to facilitate their deprecation in the future, and provides new ptrace requests that mirror the x86 and sparc ones and use the same numbers: PTRACE_GETREGS : returns an entire pt_regs (the whole thing, not only the 32 GPRs, though that doesn't include the FPRs etc... There's a compat version for 32 bits that returns a 32 bits compatible pt_regs (44 uints) PTRACE_SETREGS : sets an entire pt_regs (the whole thing, not only the 32 GPRs, though that doesn't include the FPRs etc... Some registers cannot be written to and will just be dropped, this is the same as with POKEUSR, that is anything above MQ on 32 bits and CCR on 64 bits. There is a compat version as well. PTRACE_GETFPREGS : returns all the FP registers -including- the FPSCR that is 33 doubles (regardless of 32/64 bits) PTRACE_SETFPREGS : sets all the FP registers -including- the FPSCR that is 33 doubles (regardless of 32/64 bits) And two that only exist on 64 bits kernels: PTRACE_GETREGS64 : Same as PTRACE_GETREGS, except there is no compat function, a 32 bits process will obtain the full 64 bits registers PTRACE_SETREGS64 : Same as PTRACE_SETREGS, except there is no compat function, a 32 bits process will set the full 64 bits registers The two later ones makes things easier to have a 32 bits debugger on a 64 bits program (or on a 32 bits program that uses the full 64 bits of the GPRs, which is possible though has issues that will be fixed in a later patch). Finally, while at it, the patch removes a whole bunch of code duplication between ptrace32.c and ptrace.c, in large part by having the former call into the later for all requests that don't need any special "compat" treatment. 2007-06-14[POWERPC] Rewrite IO allocation & mapping on powerpc64Benjamin Herrenschmidt
This rewrites pretty much from scratch the handling of MMIO and PIO space allocations on powerpc64. The main goals are: - Get rid of imalloc and use more common code where possible - Simplify the current mess so that PIO space is allocated and mapped in a single place for PCI bridges - Handle allocation constraints of PIO for all bridges including hot plugged ones within the 2GB space reserved for IO ports, so that devices on hotplugged busses will now work with drivers that assume IO ports fit in an int. - Cleanup and separate tracking of the ISA space in the reserved low 64K of IO space. No ISA -> Nothing mapped there. I booted a cell blade with IDE on PIO and MMIO and a dual G5 so far, that's it :-) With this patch, all allocations are done using the code in mm/vmalloc.c, though we use the low level __get_vm_area with explicit start/stop constraints in order to manage separate areas for vmalloc/vmap, ioremap, and PCI IOs. This greatly simplifies a lot of things, as you can see in the diffstat of that patch :-) A new pair of functions pcibios_map/unmap_io_space() now replace all of the previous code that used to manipulate PCI IOs space. The allocation is done at mapping time, which is now called from scan_phb's, just before the devices are probed (instead of after, which is by itself a bug fix). The only other caller is the PCI hotplug code for hot adding PCI-PCI bridges (slots). imalloc is gone, as is the "sub-allocation" thing, but I do beleive that hotplug should still work in the sense that the space allocation is always done by the PHB, but if you unmap a child bus of this PHB (which seems to be possible), then the code should properly tear down all the HPTE mappings for that area of the PHB allocated IO space. I now always reserve the first 64K of IO space for the bridge with the ISA bus on it. I have moved the code for tracking ISA in a separate file which should also make it smarter if we ever are capable of hot unplugging or re-plugging an ISA bridge. This should have a side effect on platforms like powermac where VGA IOs will no longer work. This is done on purpose though as they would have worked semi-randomly before. The idea at this point is to isolate drivers that might need to access those and fix them by providing a proper function to obtain an offset to the legacy IOs of a given bus. This makes unmap_vm_area static and a wrapper around a new exported unmap_kernel_range that takes an explicit range instead of a vm_area struct. This makes it more versatile for code that wants to play with kernel page tables outside of the standard vmalloc area. (One example is some rework of the PowerPC PCI IO space mapping code that depends on that patch and removes some code duplication and horrible abuse of forged struct vm_struct). This must be the oldest bug that we have got. Leaving interrupts "as they are" for the R3000 obviously means copying IEp to IEc. 2007-06-09libata-core/sff: Fix multiple assumptions about DMAAlan Cox
The ata IRQ ack functions are only used when debugging. Unfortunately almost every controller that calls them can cause crashes in some configurations as there are missing checks for bmdma presence. In addition ata_port_start insists of installing DMA buffers and pad buffers for controllers regardless. The SFF controllers actually need to make that decision dynamically at controller setup time and all need the same helper - so we add ata_sff_port_start. 2007-06-08hexdump: more output formattingRandy Dunlap
Add a prefix string parameter. Callers are responsible for any string length/alignment that they want to see in the output. I.e., callers should pad strings to achieve alignment if they want that. Add rowsize parameter. This is the number of raw data bytes to be printed per line. Must be 16 or 32. Add a groupsize parameter. This allows callers to dump values as 1-byte, 2-byte, 4-byte, or 8-byte numbers. Default is 1-byte numbers. If the total length is not an even multiple of groupsize, 1-byte numbers are printed. Add an "ascii" output parameter. This causes ASCII data output following the hex data output. Clean up some doc examples. Align the ASCII output on all lines that are produced by one call. Add a new interface, print_hex_dump_bytes(), that is a shortcut to print_hex_dump(), using default parameter values to print 16 bytes in byte-size chunks of hex + ASCII output, using printk level KERN_DEBUG. 2007-06-08pi-futex: fix exit races and locking problemsAlexey Kuznetsov
1. New entries can be added to tsk->pi_state_list after task completed exit_pi_state_list(). The result is memory leakage and deadlocks. 2. handle_mm_fault() is called under spinlock. The result is obvious. 3. results in self-inflicted deadlock inside glibc. Sometimes futex_lock_pi returns -ESRCH, when it is not expected and glibc enters to for(;;) sleep() to simulate deadlock. This problem is quite obvious and I think the patch is right. Though it looks like each "if" in futex_lock_pi() got some stupid special case "else if". :-) 4. sometimes futex_lock_pi() returns -EDEADLK, when nobody has the lock. The reason is also obvious (see comment in the patch), but correct fix is far beyond my comprehension. I guess someone already saw this, the chunk: if (rt_mutex_trylock(&q.pi_state->pi_mutex)) ret = 0; is obviously from the same opera. But it does not work, because the rtmutex is really taken at this point: wake_futex_pi() of previous owner reassigned it to us. My fix works. But it looks very stupid. I would think about removal of shift of ownership in wake_futex_pi() and making all the work in context of process taking lock. This fixes also the issue, when a task with recursive segfaults is not able to release the futexes. Fix 2) Cleanup the lookup_pi_state() failure path and solve the -ESRCH problem finally. Fix 3) Solve the fixup_pi_state_owner() problem which needs to do the fixup in the lock protected section by using the in_atomic userspace access functions. This removes also the ugly lock drop / unqueue inside of fixup_pi_state() Fix 4) Fix a stale lock in the error path of futex_wake_pi() Added some error checks for verification. The -EDEADLK problem is solved by the rtmutex fixups. Instead of returning the smallest available object return ZERO_SIZE_PTR. A ZERO_SIZE_PTR can be legitimately used as an object pointer as long as it is not deferenced. The dereference of ZERO_SIZE_PTR causes a distinctive fault. kfree can handle a ZERO_SIZE_PTR in the same way as NULL.
