2008-10-20container freezer: implement freezer cgroup subsystemMatt Helsley
This patch implements a new freezer subsystem in the control groups framework. It provides a way to stop and resume execution of all tasks in a cgroup by writing in the cgroup filesystem. The freezer subsystem in the container filesystem defines a file named freezer.state. Writing "FROZEN" to the state file will freeze all tasks in the cgroup. Subsequently writing "RUNNING" will unfreeze the tasks in the cgroup. Reading will return the current state. * Examples of usage : # mkdir /containers/freezer # mount -t cgroup -ofreezer freezer /containers # mkdir /containers/0 # echo $some_pid > /containers/0/tasks to get status of the freezer subsystem : # cat /containers/0/freezer.state RUNNING to freeze all tasks in the container : # echo FROZEN > /containers/0/freezer.state # cat /containers/0/freezer.state FREEZING # cat /containers/0/freezer.state FROZEN to unfreeze all tasks in the container : # echo RUNNING > /containers/0/freezer.state # cat /containers/0/freezer.state RUNNING This is the basic mechanism which should do the right thing for user space task in a simple scenario. It's important to note that freezing can be incomplete. In that case we return EBUSY. This means that some tasks in the cgroup are busy doing something that prevents us from completely freezing the cgroup at this time. After EBUSY, the cgroup will remain partially frozen -- reflected by freezer.state reporting "FREEZING" when read. The state will remain "FREEZING" until one of these things happens: 1) Userspace cancels the freezing operation by writing "RUNNING" to the freezer.state file 2) Userspace retries the freezing operation by writing "FROZEN" to the freezer.state file (writing "FREEZING" is not legal and returns EIO) 3) The tasks that blocked the cgroup from entering the "FROZEN" state disappear from the cgroup's set of tasks. 2008-10-20container freezer: make refrigerator always availableMatt Helsley
Now that the TIF_FREEZE flag is available in all architectures, extract the refrigerator() and freeze_task() from kernel/power/process.c and make it available to all. The refrigerator() can now be used in a control group subsystem implementing a control group freezer. 2008-07-24pm: boot time suspend selftestDavid Brownell
Boot-time test for system suspend states (STR or standby). The generic RTC framework triggers wakeup alarms, which are used to exit those states. - Measures some aspects of suspend time ... this uses "jiffies" until someone converts it to use a timebase that works properly even while timer IRQs are disabled. - Triggered by a command line parameter. By default nothing even vaguely troublesome will happen, but "test_suspend=mem" will give you a brief STR test during system boot. (Or you may need to use "test_suspend=standby" instead, if your hardware needs that.) This isn't without problems. It fires early enough during boot that for example both PCMCIA and MMC stacks have misbehaved. The workaround in those cases was to boot without such media cards inserted. 2008-02-01PM: Make PM_TRACE more architecture independentJohannes Berg
When trying to debug a suspend failure I started implementing PM_TRACE for powerpc. I then noticed that I'm debugging a suspend failure and so PM_TRACE isn't useful at all, but thought that nonetheless this could be useful in the future. Basically, to support PM_TRACE, you add a Kconfig option that selects PM_TRACE and provides the infrastructure as per the help text of PM_TRACE. 2007-10-18serial: turn serial console suspend a boot rather than compile time optionAndres Salomon
Currently, there's a CONFIG_DISABLE_CONSOLE_SUSPEND that allows one to stop the serial console from being suspended when the rest of the machine goes to sleep. This is incredibly useful for debugging power management-related things; however, having it as a compile-time option has proved to be incredibly inconvenient for us (OLPC). There are plenty of times that we want serial console to not suspend, but for the most part we'd like serial console to be suspended. This drops CONFIG_DISABLE_CONSOLE_SUSPEND, and replaces it with a kernel boot parameter (no_console_suspend). By default, the serial console will be suspended along with the rest of the system; by passing 'no_console_suspend' to the kernel during boot, serial console will remain alive during suspend. For now, this is pretty serial console specific; further fixes could be applied to make this work for things like netconsole. Signed-off-by: Andres Salomon <dilinger@debian.org> Acked-by: "Rafael J. 2007-08-31PM: Fix dependencies of CONFIG_SUSPEND and CONFIG_HIBERNATIONRafael J. Wysocki
Dependencies of CONFIG_SUSPEND and CONFIG_HIBERNATION introduced by commit 296699de6bdc717189a331ab6bbe90e05c94db06 "Introduce CONFIG_SUSPEND for suspend-to-Ram and standby" are incorrect, as they don't cover the facts that (1) not all architectures support suspend and (2) SMP hibernation is only possible on X86 and PPC64 (if CONFIG_PPC64_SWSUSP is set). 2007-07-29Introduce CONFIG_SUSPEND for suspend-to-Ram and standbyRafael J. Wysocki
Introduce CONFIG_SUSPEND representing the ability to enter system sleep states, such as the ACPI S3 state, and allow the user to choose SUSPEND and HIBERNATION independently of each other. Make HOTPLUG_CPU be selected automatically if SUSPEND or HIBERNATION has been chosen and the kernel is intended for SMP systems. Also, introduce CONFIG_PM_SLEEP which is automatically selected if CONFIG_SUSPEND or CONFIG_HIBERNATION is set and use it to select the code needed for both suspend and hibernation. The top-level power management headers and the ACPI code related to suspend and hibernation are modified to use the new definitions (the changes in drivers/acpi/sleep/main.c are, mostly, moving code to reduce the number of ifdefs). There are many other files in which CONFIG_PM can be replaced with CONFIG_PM_SLEEP or even with CONFIG_SUSPEND, but they can be updated in the future. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2005-09-05[PATCH] encrypt suspend data for easy wipingAndreas Steinmetz
The patch protects from leaking sensitive data after resume from suspend. During suspend a temporary key is created and this key is used to encrypt the data written to disk. When, during resume, the data was read back into memory the temporary key is destroyed which simply means that all data written to disk during suspend are then inaccessible so they can't be stolen lateron. Think of the following: you suspend while an application is running that keeps sensitive data in memory. The application itself prevents the data from being swapped out. Suspend, however, must write these data to swap to be able to resume lateron. Without suspend encryption your sensitive data are then stored in plaintext on disk. This means that after resume your sensitive data are accessible to all applications having direct access to the swap device which was used for suspend. If you don't need swap after resume these data can remain on disk virtually forever. Thus it can happen that your system gets broken in weeks later and sensitive data which you thought were encrypted and protected are retrieved and stolen from the swap device. 2005-04-16Linux-2.6.12-rc2v2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
